The Process
Part of my process when adding textures and lighting is that I don't like to add some of the finer details of the map before texturing and lighting. For example, the rubble in the room was always going to be there, but I wanted the textures in first to make sure the rubble would look nice. I also added small altars for the keys to make them stand out a little bit. That said I think this worked against me since I think my playtesting could have been more refined with the textures and finer details of some of the rooms. I also found that I didn't have certain textures I wanted to have in my custom wad file when I was decorating the level out. I think a better process for me would be to texture the broader parts of the grey box such as the floors and walls and add placeholder shapes for the smaller details in the level.
