Notebot 1.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@giobachour giobachour released this 12 Oct 10:10
  • Drill with a Claude key works again. Every practice-question request on an Anthropic key was being refused (Anthropic's strict JSON mode rejects the size limits the question schemas carried); the limits are now left to Notebot's own checks. Gemini keys were never affected.
  • The release tooling fetches the Windows installer in small pieces, so a release no longer waits hours on a throttled download.

First time here? The install guide covers both platforms. Each installer ships a .sig signature that Notebot verifies before it installs an update, and refuses anything that does not match.

  • Any AI key now works: Google Gemini (still the recommendation — its free tier is the best deal), Anthropic Claude, or OpenAI. One key field in setup and in the gear menu; Notebot reads which company a key belongs to. A paid key shows today's spend in dollars, and if it runs out of credit Notebot falls back to your Gemini key and says so on the note.
  • With a Claude key, notes are written in one pass by Claude Opus; the Done line names what it cost.
  • Homework next to a lecture: a short PDF of exercises no longer flattens the lecture note. Each exercise is solved by code, twice — when the two answers agree you get a worked card, otherwise the note keeps the question and says why it was left unanswered. No made-up numbers.
  • A table of values the lecture does not show (one an AI wrote from memory) is removed rather than kept, with a line pointing at the slide.
  • Smaller: a picture the AI cannot read is refused in plain words; the Done line reports how many exercises were worked.
  • Not yet tried live: OpenAI keys — written from OpenAI's documentation; tell me if yours misbehaves.

Notebot 1.2.5

@giobachour giobachour released this 08 Oct 10:21

Two fixes.

Chemistry formulas display properly. Notes that write chemistry (iron nitrate, reaction equations, ion charges) used to show a red "\ce" and plain italic letters; they now show real subscripts, charges, reaction arrows and units, in notes, Drill, PDFs and AI help.

Notes you write yourself show up in Recent notes on Home. A note started with New note never appeared there, because only opening a note counted. Saving now counts too, and a Home tab left open refreshes when you come back to it.

A small fix.

The "What's new" card no longer draws an outline around "Got it" when it opens. Return still closes it; an outline only appears when you move between its two buttons with the keyboard.

Drill keeps your quizzes, and the vault graph has a legend.

Leave a quiz halfway (close its tab, switch to something else, even quit) and it waits for you: the course's Drill page shows "Pick up where you left off".

Every quiz is kept under Past quizzes with its score. Continue it, retake the same questions, or retake just the ones you missed.

Drill is answered with the mouse now: no number keys and no key chips.

The vault graph has a legend with each course's colour and note count. Point at a course to see only its notes; click to keep it lit.

Two small fixes.

The "What's new" card no longer sits inside a white outline on the Mac.

The × and "Keep in note" on an AI help card no longer underline when you point at them.

A fix for Drill.

Written problems now accept a rounded answer: for an answer of 1.2529, typing 1.253, 1.252 or 1.25 is marked right (from three significant figures; 1 or 1.3 still are not), and the check says "right to the digits you typed". Until now a rounded answer was "Not quite" unless you asked Gemini to look again.

Two new ways to study.

AI help, right in your notes — select any passage and tap ✦ for a simpler explanation, an example, or why it's true, right under the paragraph. "Keep in note" saves the ones that help.

Drill, rebuilt — practise the way each course tests you: multiple choice, true/false, short answers scored out of 10, written problems and essays, from your notes' own questions, new AI ones, or both. Every AI answer is checked before you see it, and every card says where it came from. Keys 1–4 pick an answer and ↩ moves on; drill one chapter at a time; a missed question comes back with its options reshuffled.

Also new: "Regenerate…" (right-click a generated note) rewrites it without its lecture files, and a "What's new" card shows all this once after you update.

Notebot 1.1.8

@giobachour giobachour released this 04 Oct 09:58

Worked answers read step by step.

  • A line break in a note is now shown as a line break, the way Obsidian shows it. Step-by-step solutions in callouts, lists and paragraphs, with each calculation on its own line, no longer run together into one paragraph. Nothing needs regenerating: the notes you already have read better right away.

Better-organised notes, a reading bookmark, and course colours you pick.

  • Notes follow the lecture's topics. One quick request plans the sections first, so a long deck comes out as a handful of topics with subheadings under each instead of dozens of flat sections, and about a fifth shorter, without dropping the slides' worked examples, numbers, tables or code.
  • Everyone writes on gemini-3.5-flash-lite now, in parts: 500 free requests a day, and it answers when the others are busy. Short lectures are written in parts too. A note that can't be split (two decks at once, a recording or typed notes alone) still goes to gemini-2.5-flash where your key has it.
  • A reading bookmark: leave a note and come back, and a "Continue reading" pin beside the Outline points at the heading you were on. Click it to jump there. It never covers the text; in a narrower window it shrinks to a small bookmark that opens on hover.
  • Pick a course's colour: click the coloured dot next to the course in the generator, or right-click a course folder → Colour. "Auto" goes back to the automatic one.
  • Fixed: sign-in on Windows PCs that reserve the ports it uses (WinError 10013, common with Hyper-V, WSL or Docker); "Professor's emphasis" labels on slides that never flagged anything; callouts that showed up as grey code blocks; headings that lost their numbers (802.11, 2.4 GHz) or showed page ranges.
