Easy Write 2.0.2: Mail selection fix

Choose a tag to compare

@onekapisch onekapisch released this 24 Oct 05:14

Easy Write 2.0.2 fixes selected-text capture in Mail’s rich-text composer. If you highlighted text and saw “Select text in an app that exposes its selection…” in the notch, this patch adds support for Mail’s WebKit text-marker selections.

Replacement still verifies the original app, window, field, selection and text. Selection capture does not copy source text to the clipboard. Processing remains on-device, and update consent is unchanged. The app also includes the approved “Translate and rewrite without switching apps.” positioning.

Install: Download EasyWrite-2.0.2.dmg, open it and drag Easy Write to Applications. Official 2.0 and 2.0.1 users can choose Settings → Updates → Check for Updates after the matching feed is live. Pre-Sparkle 1.x and default source builds install manually.

Requires Apple Silicon, macOS 26 or later, and Apple Intelligence enabled and ready. Developer-ID signed, Apple-notarized and stapled. Free and open source under the MIT License.

Validation: 125 self-tests, six real-model smoke scenarios, complete 40-sentence register evaluation with no model errors or detected formal-register leaks, strict signature/Gatekeeper checks, read-only mounted-payload checks, and independent Sparkle payload-signature verification. The owner confirmed Mail translation or preview works in the signed local test build; full replacement, broader app compatibility and VoiceOver remain separate acceptance checks.

@onekapisch onekapisch released this 23 Oct 17:46

Clearer in light and dark mode

Easy Write 2.0.1 fixes the washed-out menu over bright windows. The menu now follows macOS light and dark appearance with opaque panel/card surfaces, readable secondary text and clearer controls.

The purple accent and familiar layout are retained. Translation, replacement safeguards, history consent and optional update checks are unchanged.

Update

  • Official 2.0 builds: open Settings → Updates → Check for Updates. Automatic checks remain optional.
  • 1.x and default source builds: quit Easy Write, download the DMG and replace the app in Applications.

Requires Apple Silicon, macOS 26+ and Apple Intelligence enabled with its model ready. This update does not certify every host app or translation result.

Developer-ID signed, notarized and stapled. Version 2.0.1, build 27.
DMG: 4,006,824 bytes.

@onekapisch onekapisch released this 23 Oct 09:41

Easy Write 2.0

Translate and rewrite selected text without leaving the app you are using.
Free, open source, and powered by Apple's on-device model.

What is new

  • Easy Write Bar: press Option-Command-K to choose a language, tone or writing action,
    then review the result before replacing or copying.
  • Two-way translation: Option-Command-T translates into your target language or back
    into your own. Option-Command-E opens a reader card for selected text.
  • Formal or informal: choose the relationship as well as the language, including German
    Sie/du. Keep optional language and tone preferences per app.
  • Your own actions: save instructions for grammar, shorter drafts, polite replies and more.
  • Native interface: redesigned menu-bar panel, reader, settings and notch progress display.
  • Privacy controls: glossary, style notes, and optional local history that is off by default.

Install or upgrade

  1. Quit any running copy of Easy Write.
  2. Download EasyWrite-2.0.dmg, open it and drag Easy Write.app into Applications.
  3. Launch from Applications, grant Accessibility, and ensure Apple Intelligence is ready.

Requirements: Apple Silicon, macOS 26 or later, and Apple Intelligence enabled with
its model ready. App support varies because source apps must expose their selected text.
AI can make mistakes; review important output.

Coming from 1.x? This upgrade needs one manual installation. Settings migrate, but macOS
may require a new Accessibility grant. The older app cannot receive an updater retroactively.
Future update checks are optional. Homebrew installation is not offered yet.

Translation and rewriting stay on your Mac. Optional update checks contact update servers but
never include selected text. History, if enabled, stores text locally without encryption.

Both the app and installer are Developer-ID signed and notarized. This release is 2.0, build 24.

Easy Write 1.1.1 — clearer 'Apple Intelligence unavailable' message

Choose a tag to compare

@onekapisch onekapisch released this 14 Jul 15:29

Bug-fix release.

Fixed: When Apple Intelligence wasn't ready, the app showed a single generic "enable it in System Settings" message for every possible reason — including for people who had already enabled Apple Intelligence but whose on-device model was still downloading in the background (the most common case right after you turn it on). The message now reads the actual reason and tells you which one it is:

  • Model still downloading — wait until System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri shows it's ready (needs free storage + a network connection).
  • Apple Intelligence turned off — enable it in Settings.
  • Mac not supported — needs Apple Silicon (M1+) and macOS 26.

No feature changes. Build from source as usual (see the README).

Easy Write 1.1 — Arabic support

Easy Write 1.1

🌍 Arabic support

Arabic is now one of the 13 target languages. It's tuned to produce Modern Standard Arabic (الفصحى) rather than mixed dialect, and (like English, Japanese, and Chinese) uses natural-register translation since Arabic formality doesn't reduce to a single Sie/du-style pronoun pair.

It's strong on everyday messages. As with any on-device translation, it can occasionally slip on more complex sentences — double-check anything important.

✨ Also improved

  • The translation prompt now explicitly emphasises subject/object direction (who does what to whom), improving accuracy across all languages.

Requires macOS 26+ on Apple Silicon with Apple Intelligence enabled. Build from source — see the README.
