"From Lagrange to Leonardo: Quantum system software at LINKS Foundation", Paolo Viviani (LINKS Foundation)
- ABSTRACT: LINKS Foundation has operated Lagrange, an IQM Spark and the first operational quantum computer in Italy, since September 2025. It has served about 1,000 users and roughly 800k jobs. Running it as a shared facility required HPC-style accounting, which the machine did not provide: projects, budgets, reservations, SSO and fair-share policies. We present the open-source stack we built for this. An API proxy that is transparent to the IQM client connects to a back-end for project management and a user dashboard. The stack is modular and ready to be integrated with SLURM as a proof of concept. We then turn to our work on HPC-QC co-scheduling developed with E4 Computer Engineering, Cineca and University of Torino, that shows how exclusive co-scheduling wastes resources. Virtual QPUs make better use of short superconducting tasks. For long neutral-atom tasks, malleability and workflows cut classical node-seconds by up to about 54%.
