Starting the IPython notebook server

Your virtual machine has been pre-configured to run an IPython Notebook server that can be accessed via HTTPS.

Once you've logged into your virtual machine you can start the IPython notebook server by typing the following command in your shell:

ipython notebook --profile=nbserver

To connect to the IPython notebook point your web browser to https://your.vm.ip.address:7230/ and enter the corresponding password (discussed in class). For security purposes please shutdown your IPython notebook server when it's not in use.

Gotchas

  1. You must use the HTTPS (not HTTP) protocol to connect to the notebook server.
  2. The Safari webrowser doesn't like the combination of HTTPS and a self-signed web certificate. Use Chrome or Firefox instead of Safari.

Running IPython locally

If you were running IPython locally, say on your laptop, the equivalent functionality could be had by running IPython as:

ipython notebook --pylab=inline
