Welcome to the Poutnik's Brouter custom profiles wiki
-
The profiles are used by Brouter to calculate routes for bicycles, pedestrians and experimentally cars. The bike profiles are mainly focused on trekking/travelling, the foot ones on ( mountain ) hiking.
-
You can learn a lot about concepts a/o terms of my profiles in the Glossary page. There are partially presented also related terms of Brouter itself and hosting applications ( mainly LocusMap ).
-
All profiles are based on universal templates for hiking / biking / car driving respectively. They are derived by switching respective logical flags and by changing numerical parameters to tweak the profile behavior. The final profiles are given more or less self-explaining names, with verbose comments in legend files.
-
The templates are under occasional development, so some experimental features, less used profiles of new versions of profiles may be found in respective project of the profile templates.
-
Choosing-bicycle-profile can advice you in what you need for the bike( choosing car or hiking profile is more straight-forward). Getting profiles guide can advice how to get what you want. Glossary provides explanations of various terms used in context of the profiles, Brouter or Locus.

WARNING For potentially challenging MTB or hiking routes, always check maps, if available also written guides or local/experienced people. High MTB/SAC scale grades, or grades out of your experience could be health/life threatening.
-
The BRouter is inherently elevation aware, able to give penalties to slopes. It can even evaluate all OSM ways differently, if on flat, uphill or downhill. E.g. it can promote main roads for downhill fast ride, while penalize it for uphill climbing. Or penalize rough surface difficult to climb up or ride down. This and its powerful scripting makes BRouter a quite unique bicycle router.
-
Trekking profiles evaluate OSM tags smoothness and MTB_scale for extra penalization. Similarly, hiking profiles evaluate the tags SAC_scale and MTB_scale.
