Layers 1 4 Base
These are the Neo layers you already know, in Noted's letter arrangement. AnNoted inherits them and changes exactly four cells – listed at the bottom of this page, because they are the only places where a Noted user will notice a difference.
Reading the pictures: a blue bar marks a key that produces a character, with its code point below. Dimmed keys with names are function keys, filled keys are modifiers, dashed outlines are unassigned. The same reading applies to the layout sheet and the on-screen keyboard.
Nothing held.

Hold Shift. Both Shift keys pressed together toggle Capslock (Shift+Shift).
Beyond the capitals this layer already carries most of the punctuation a German text needs: the quotation-mark pairs, en and em dash, the degree sign, the section sign. That is why the typography block carries no quotation marks – they are here, one key away, and duplicating them further out would be work for nothing.

Hold Mod3 (the key left of Q/C, or the one right of the space bar's neighbour – both Mod3 keys work).
Brackets, arithmetic, currency signs, the dead keys. Mod3+Tab starts a compose sequence.

Hold Mod4.
Cursor keys on the home row, a numeric pad on the right hand, Home/End/Page keys. This layer is the reason to run AnaNeo alongside a native driver in the first place – the driver cannot provide it.

| Key | Layer | Noted | AnNoted | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| space | 3 | U+200A hair space | U+00A0 no-break space | the space-bar hierarchy runs from wide to narrow; the hair space moved to layer 6, where it belongs in that order |
| space | 4 | numpad 0 | U+202F narrow no-break space | same reason – layer 4 is the second step of the hierarchy |
w |
4 | : |
numpad 0 | takes in the numpad 0 displaced above. w sits bottom-left of the numeric block, next to the 1, which is where a real keypad has its zero. The : it replaces was a duplicate – the colon is on Mod3+h. |
^ |
3 | ↻ U+21BB | empty | ↻ is a compose modifier with 70 continuations. It now lives with the other five on layer 21, and a modifier gets exactly one home. |
The last one is the single spot where AnNoted knowingly departs from the Neo standard: Mod3+^ produces nothing. It is listed here rather than buried because it is the change most likely to surprise someone coming from Neo or Noted.
Everything else on layers 1 to 4 – every letter, every bracket, every navigation key – is byte-for-byte identical to Noted.
