How to create FreeRTOS project
- Return to Home / ホーム に戻る
- The Japanese page is here: FreeRTOSプロジェクトの作成方法
- The procedure for creating a Renesas FreeRTOS project is outlined on this page.
- Renesas FreeRTOS is used in creating and using a FreeRTOS project in the e2 studio.
- The e2 studio is an Eclipse-based integrated development environment (IDE) for Renesas microcontrollers.
- The latest e2 studio can be downloaded from the Renesas Web site.
To create a FreeRTOS project, normally execute the following flow.

Overview of the procedure:
-
Create an e2 studio project: Creates a new e2 studio project. -
Add FreeRTOS: Adds the FreeRTOS source file to the e2 studio project. -
Set up the FreeRTOS portable layer: Sets MCU-dependent implementations (FreeRTOS portable layer) in the e2 studio project. -
Set up the system timer: Installs and sets up the driver for the peripheral timer that is used as the FreeRTOS system timer in the e2 studio project.
Considering the peripheral timer you wish to use before starting these tasks(*) can smooth the subsequent tasks. -
Implement an application related to FreeRTOS: Implements FreeRTOS-related application layers (FreeRTOS settings, FreeRTOS startup processing, etc.). -
Implement the user application: Implements the user application.
✅ Note
- (*) The requirement for the system timer is that it is capable of generating interrupts at an interval of at least 1 ms (a frequency no greater than 1 kHz).
Details of the procedure depend on whether the PG function of a FreeRTOS project is supported for the given RX microcontroller. For the availability of the PG function for each microcontroller, refer to About RX FreeRTOS.
For an RX microcontroller that is supported by the PG function of a FreeRTOS project, the e2 studio and Smart Configurator automatically execute the steps from Create an e2 studio project to Implement an application related to FreeRTOS. Therefore, just about the only thing the user has to execute is the Implement the user application step, thus simplifying the procedure.
For an RX microcontroller that the PG function does not support, the steps need to be executed in order by hand from the Create an e2 studio project step.
For details on the procedure, refer to How to create RX FreeRTOS project.
The PG function of a FreeRTOS project does not support the RL78 microcontroller. Therefore, the steps need to be executed in order by hand from the Create an e2 studio project step.
For the Add FreeRTOS step in particular, use the FreeRTOS project in the Blinky Demo that was downloaded in advance. The portable layer of FreeRTOS for the CC-RL compiler are included in this FreeRTOS project.
For details on the required steps, refer to the following pages. Individual pages are provided because the steps differ according to the "Coding Assistant settings" functions (Code Generator support or Smart Configurator support) of the e2 studio that can be used with the microcontroller.
- How to create projects for a microcontroller supported by the Code Generator
- How to create projects for a microcontroller supported by the Smart Configurator
Also, refer to About RL78 FreeRTOS. A list of the microcontrollers supported by FreeRTOS for the RL78 and links to the procedures for creating projects for each MCU are posted on this page.
Note that the above Blinky Demo is supplied with the FreeRTOS projects for the RL78/G14 Fast Prototyping Board (Code Generator support) and RL78/G23-128p Fast Prototyping Board (Smart Configurator support). Refer to them as required.
