ScaleInKey v1.1.5

Choose a tag to compare

@roge-rm roge-rm released this 24 Sep 14:17

Rewrote the README and the app's text so they read more plainly. The message you get on the
sequencer screen for a scale with no chords now points you to the right scales too (it used to
leave out Phrygian Dominant and include the bebop scales, which don't have chords). No other
changes.

Download ScaleInKey-1.1.5.apk below and sideload it (you'll need to allow installs from this
source in Android's settings). It's a signed universal APK, so it's one file that works on any
supported device. It's signed with the same key as every earlier release, so it installs as an
update over your existing install.

ScaleInKey v1.1.4

@roge-rm roge-rm released this 04 Sep 22:07

Header now runs edge-to-edge behind the status bar (matching the sister app,
roge-rm/MP3toMIDI), instead of sitting below a system-colored gap. Also moved
the icon source SVG into a branding/ directory and refreshed the README
screenshots, adding one for the chord progression sequencer screen.

device/architecture. Signed with the same key as every prior release, so this installs as an
update over an existing install rather than requiring a fresh install.

ScaleInKey v1.1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@roge-rm roge-rm released this 01 Sep 23:41

Adds 11 new scale types across the explorer.

  • World: Phrygian Dominant, Neapolitan Minor, Neapolitan Major
  • Jazz: Lydian Augmented, Locrian natural 2 (Half-Diminished), Bebop Dominant, Bebop Major
  • New "Symmetric" category: Whole Tone, Diminished (Whole-Half), Diminished (Half-Whole)
  • Pentatonic & Blues: Egyptian Pentatonic (Suspended)

Diatonic 7th-chord support was enabled only where the underlying harmonization actually
produces standard chord qualities (verified by brute force, not guessed) — Phrygian Dominant,
Lydian Augmented, and Locrian natural 2 get full chord rows; the rest are notes/diagrams only.

device/architecture. Signed with the same key as every prior release, so this installs as an
update over an existing install rather than requiring a fresh install.

ScaleInKey v1.1.2

@roge-rm roge-rm released this 01 Sep 17:13

ScaleInKey v1.1.2

A compatibility release on top of v1.1.1 — no functional or visual changes.

Requirements

  • Android 8.0 (API 26) or newer — lowered from Android 14. Nothing in the app actually
required API 34; it was just an arbitrary starting point. Tested on an Android 8 emulator with
    no issues.

Installation

Download ScaleInKey-1.1.2.apk below and sideload it (you'll need to allow installs from this
source in Android's settings). It's a signed universal APK — one file, works on any supported
device/architecture. Signed with the same key as every prior release, so this installs as an
update over an existing install rather than requiring a fresh install.

ScaleInKey v1.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@roge-rm roge-rm released this 01 Sep 16:36

ScaleInKey v1.1.1

A small feature release on top of v1.1.0.

Requirements

  • Android 14 (API 34) or newer. This is the app's minimum supported version.

Added

  • Bass now supports 5-string tuning. A new toggle next to the neck/fingering-chart switch on
the Bass tab (same size and style, right beside it) switches between the standard 4-string
tuning (EADG) and a 5-string tuning with an added low B string (BEADG). The neck view, the
scale-position box, and the root-note position marker all adapt automatically to the extra
    string.

Installation

Download ScaleInKey-1.1.1.apk below and sideload it (you'll need to allow installs from this
source in Android's settings). It's a signed universal APK — one file, works on any supported
device/architecture. Signed with the same key as v1.0.0/v1.0.1/v1.1.0, so this installs as an
update over an existing install rather than requiring a fresh install.

ScaleInKey v1.1.0

@roge-rm roge-rm released this 01 Sep 13:28

ScaleInKey v1.1.0

Adds a chord progression sequencer, plus a large pass of fixes and polish to the fretboard and
chord-chart diagrams.

Requirements

  • Android 14 (API 34) or newer. This is the app's minimum supported version.

Added

  • Chord progression sequencer — a new screen (switch to it via the 🎹 icon in the header) for
building an ordered sequence of the current scale's diatonic chords and playing it back at a
settable tempo. Includes a BPM stepper (default 120), beats-per-chord, a loop toggle, a chord
palette with 7th-chord entry, drag-to-reorder and tap-to-remove on queued chords, and
scroll-edge fades on the sequence row when it can scroll further.
  • Tapping and holding a note, fret, or chord-chart position now flashes a distinct highlight
color, giving clear visual feedback on exactly where a tap landed.

Fixed

  • The virtual fretboard diagrams had their string order inverted (the lowest-pitched string was
drawn at the top instead of the bottom) — fixed for both the neck view and the fingering-chart
    view.
  • Chord fingering numbers could suggest stretching one finger across open strings to reach two
far-apart frets, which isn't physically possible — finger assignment now follows real
open-position and barre-chord fingering conventions instead.
  • Selecting or deselecting a chord while fingering-chart mode was on could jump the diagram box to
a different size; the neck view, scale-position box, and chord-shape diagrams now share
consistent, content-derived sizing and animate smoothly between states instead of jumping.
  • Fret spacing, note-circle size, string spacing, and label text size are now consistent across
all three fretboard/chord-chart diagram types — previously each computed these independently
and came out visibly different from one another.
  • Fret lines in the scale-position box no longer overshoot past the last string for narrower
    instruments (Ukulele/Bass).
  • The topmost note circle in the fingering-chart views was sometimes clipped by the box's top
edge, and the bottom circle could crowd the fret-number row for Ukulele/Bass — both now have
    comfortable clearance.
  • The fingering-chart grids (scale-position box and chord shape) are now centered horizontally in
their box — they were previously skewed toward one side.
  • A queued chord in the sequencer no longer changes its triad/7th voicing retroactively if you
flip that toggle after it's already been added — each queued chord keeps the voicing it had
    when placed.

Changed

  • The fingering-chart diagrams (chord shape and scale-position box) are now sized 25% larger than
before for legibility, since they only ever show 4 frets at a time versus the neck view's 12.
  • The scale-position box (shown when fingering-chart mode is on but no chord is selected) now
shows note names instead of finger numbers, since there's no chord to finger.
  • Default sequencer BPM is 120 (was 100).

Installation

Download ScaleInKey-1.1.0.apk below and sideload it (you'll need to allow installs from this
source in Android's settings). It's a signed universal APK — one file, works on any supported
device/architecture. Signed with the same key as v1.0.0/v1.0.1, so this installs as an update
over an existing install rather than requiring a fresh install.

ScaleInKey v1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@roge-rm roge-rm released this 31 Aug 17:32

ScaleInKey v1.0.1

A fixes-and-polish release on top of v1.0.0.

Requirements

  • Android 14 (API 34) or newer. This is the app's minimum supported version.

Fixed

  • Deselecting a chord (tapping an already-selected chord card again) no longer plays its sound —
    only selecting a chord does.
  • Notes and chords now play correctly over each other. Previously, triggering a new note/chord
while an earlier one was still ringing silently cancelled the earlier one's release, leaving it
stuck on; enough stuck notes would eventually exhaust the synth's voice pool and further notes
    would stop sounding at all.

Changed

  • Toggling a chord card between its triad and 7th voicing is now a long-press on the card
instead of tapping a small "7th" chip — the chip sat inside the card's own tap area and was
easy to hit by accident when just meaning to select the chord. It's still shown as a visual
indicator of the current voicing, just without its own separate tap target.
  • Ukulele now has its own distinct sound instead of sharing Guitar's nylon-string timbre.
General MIDI has no dedicated ukulele instrument, so Ukulele now uses a Banjo patch — its
bright, short-decay plucked character is a much closer match to a real ukulele.
  • Bass note/chord previews (tapping a chord card, or a note pill, while Bass is the active
instrument) now play just the root note, pitched down into a real bass register — previously
they attempted a full chord voicing centered near middle C, the same register as every other
    instrument.
  • A short last row of chord cards (e.g. 7 diatonic chords splitting into a row of 4 and a row of
    3) is now centered instead of left-aligned with empty space on the right.

Installation

Download ScaleInKey-1.0.1.apk below and sideload it (you'll need to allow installs from this
source in Android's settings). It's a signed universal APK — one file, works on any supported
device/architecture. Signed with the same key as v1.0.0, so this installs as an update over an
existing v1.0.0 install rather than requiring a fresh install.

ScaleInKey v1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@roge-rm roge-rm released this 31 Aug 16:47

ScaleInKey v1.0.0

First release — a scale and chord explorer for Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, and Bass.

Requirements

  • Android 14 (API 34) or newer. This is the app's minimum supported version.

What's included

  • 20 scale types across five categories: the 7 diatonic modes, Harmonic/Melodic Minor,
Major/Minor Pentatonic, Major/Minor Blues, seven World/Exotic scales (Hungarian Minor,
Byzantine, Persian, Hirajoshi, In Sen, Iwato, Enigmatic), and two Jazz melodic-minor modes
(Altered, Lydian Dominant) — all correctly spelled in every key.
  • Diatonic chords for every scale that supports them, with a per-chord triad/7th toggle.
  • Four instrument diagrams — Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, Bass — highlighting the current scale or
    selected chord.
  • Fingering-chart mode for Guitar/Ukulele/Bass: real chord-box diagrams for the selected
chord (using known open-position shapes where one exists, with an algorithmic fallback so even
exotic chords get a playable shape), or a finger-numbered scale-position box when no chord is
    selected.
  • Tap-to-hear playback of any note, chord, or fretboard/chord-chart position through a real
SoundFont synth, with the option to load your own .sf2 file.

Installation

source in Android's settings). It's a signed universal APK — one file, works on any supported
device/architecture.
