Playing Games

Starting a game

From Home: Home is built for getting into a game quickly, so pressing A acts on what you have focused instead of opening Game Details first. It surfaces games you're likely to want:

  • Recently played
  • Favorites
  • Picks, chosen from your play and download history
  • Pinned collections

Depending on your home layout the focused thing may not be a game at all, so exactly what A does follows from what you're pointing at.

Launching a game from Home uses the resolved variant without prompting, so the most recent thing you played picks up where you left off.

From Library: Press A to open Game Details. Library is for exploring and managing your full collection. From Game Details, press A to launch.

From Game Details: Press Start to open the context menu for additional options — manage saves, select variant, file management, netplay, etc. The left-hand menu also has a Per-Game Settings entry for emulator, core, and path overrides (see below).

Game Details also shows Related Games — titles from the same series and franchise, plus similar games by genre and era (re-sync your library to populate it).

If the game isn't downloaded, Argosy downloads it first automatically. When a save exists — locally or on your RomM server — launching offers Continue or New Game, so a freshly synced device picks up your cloud progress instead of starting over.

Emulator selection and Per-Game Settings

Argosy picks an emulator based on your platform settings. To override it for a single game, open Game Details and select Per-Game Settings from the left-hand menu. The modal covers:

  • Emulator and Core: override the platform assignment for this game.
  • Save Path: where this game's save files live (file-based emulators only).
  • Display Target: which screen the game launches on (dual-screen devices only).
  • File Extension: preferred file type when a game has multiple formats.
  • A shortcut to the platform's full settings page.

Each row shows the platform-inherited default live, so you can see what the game would use before overriding anything. Overridden rows are marked and can be reset to inherit again. Changing the game's emulator resets its core to that emulator's default and clears its save location, since neither carries across emulators; the file extension, display target, and controller type overrides carry over.

Built-in Libretro cores are used by default. External emulators can be assigned per-platform in Settings, or per-game from Per-Game Settings.

Variants and multi-disc

Games with multiple files (regional variants, translations) prompt a picker when launched from Library or Game Details. See Variants for how Argosy resolves which file to use and how to pin a default.

Multi-disc games are a separate case and don't show a picker at launch: Argosy registers every disc under one library entry as soon as your library syncs, whether RomM stored them as separate discs or as one folder holding all of them. Launching starts you on disc 1. On platforms that build a disc playlist (PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast, Amiga), switch discs at any point from the in-game menu's Swap Disc option instead of relaunching. If a disc isn't downloaded yet, Argosy prompts you to fetch the missing disc(s) first. See Variants for more on how the two RomM shapes are handled.

Netplay

To host or join a session with a friend, see the Netplay page. Netplay is only supported for certain cores on the Built-in Emulator.

Dual-screen devices

On supported handhelds with a secondary display, you can pin a game to the second screen from its detail page. See Dual-Screen.

In-game (built-in emulator)

Combo Action
Start + Select Open in-game menu

Other hotkeys (save/load, fast-forward, rewind, suspend) are bound in Settings > Built-in Emulator > Controls > Hotkeys. See Hotkeys for defaults and configuration.

The in-game menu includes:

  • Save / Load state
  • Swap disc (multi-disc games)
  • Cheats (where supported)
  • Settings (video, audio, input, overrides)
  • Netplay controls (open session, manage connection)
  • Exit

In-game (external emulators)

Argosy launches the game, but the emulator handles controls and menus from there. Argosy detects when the emulator exits and returns to the library.

After playing

Saves sync to RomM automatically when you exit, if Save Sync is enabled. If you're offline, saves queue locally and upload when the connection returns.
