TapeBrowser 0.17.1

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 14 Oct 03:48

What's new

  • Share on X: share any app from a directory card, a list row or the site info panel. The post links the app's landing page and the official TapeKit gateway, and ends with #tapeout #tapekit #bem.
  • Zoom on shell pages: Help, Settings and Publish now zoom with ⌘+ / ⌘- / ⌘0 instead of zooming the site underneath. The new tab page and these pages start at 110%.
  • New tab page: a short introduction to DeWEB apps sits before the publish button, and the banner ad is smaller.

Install

  • macOS (Apple silicon): signed and notarized. Drag TapeBrowser into Applications and open it.
  • Windows: the installer isn't signed; SmartScreen may warn, choose More info → Run anyway.
  • Linux: chmod +x the AppImage before running.

Windows and Linux builds are cross-built on macOS and have not been tested on real machines yet.

SHA-256 checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

TapeBrowser 0.17.0

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 13 Oct 00:58

New in 0.17.0: phone and tablet page sizes, quick tips, and easier local preview and publishing.

  • Page size: a button next to the bookmark star shows the page at tablet (820) or phone (390) width, centered, with the screen size emulated. Handy for sites built only for phones. The choice is remembered per site.
  • Quick tip: circuit sites get a tip button next to reload. It tips 0.01 BEM to the current site; a dialog shows the amount first, then your wallet asks for confirmation.
  • Preview a folder: a folder button next to reload and a "Preview a Folder" button on the start page open a local folder for preview. The start page also has "Upload & Publish an App" (the new name for "Publish to container").
  • Directory: once a wallet is connected, a Mine filter shows only the sites it holds. New Art category (art in deweb.json); NFT sites count as finance.
  • Card covers: sites with no logo or cover use a local screenshot of their home page as the card cover, taken when you open it and kept only on your machine. Local preview can make cover.jpg from a screenshot of the page so it ships on chain.

TapeBrowser 0.16.1

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 11 Oct 04:28

New in 0.16.1: a fix for the wallet button.

  • Wallet button stays red after switching chains: after clicking the red wallet button to switch the wallet to the site's chain, some wallets kept the button red even though the switch succeeded. The button now turns back to normal as soon as the wallet confirms the switch.

TapeBrowser 0.16.0

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 11 Oct 03:28

New in 0.16.0: sites shared on TapeCode are marked in the directory.

  • Shared by TapeCode: in DeWEB Apps, sites that a developer has shared on TapeTape in TapeCode get a "Shared by TapeCode" tag. The list comes from tapecode.ai's public feed (read hourly, no login), not from the chain. It only means someone shared the site there, not that the site was built with TapeCode. If the feed can't be read, the last list is kept and nothing else is affected.

TapeBrowser 0.15.0

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 10 Oct 09:08

New in 0.15.0: TapeBrowser now tells you when a new version is out.

  • Update check: on startup (at most once a day) TapeBrowser reads the latest version number from GitHub Releases. When a newer version is available, a dialog offers to open the release page, remind you later, or skip that version. Nothing is downloaded or installed automatically; install the new version over the old one and your bookmarks and settings are kept.
  • Check for Updates…: check any time from the menu (TapeBrowser menu on macOS, Help menu on Windows and Linux).

The check only requests api.github.com/repos/trytotapeout/TapeBrowser/releases/latest and sends nothing else. Earlier versions don't have it, so 0.14.0 and older need to be updated by hand once.

TapeBrowser 0.14.0

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 10 Oct 07:34

New in 0.14.0: signed and notarized macOS builds, and publishing a local folder to your own container (experimental).

  • Signed and notarized on macOS: the macOS build is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Drag it to Applications and open it; there's no more Open Anyway step in System Settings.
  • Publish to Container (experimental): in the local preview panel, click Publish to Container…, pick a chain (BNB Chain or X Layer) and one of your circuits, review the plan and estimated cost, then publish. A circuit without a container can be opened in the same flow. Your wallet usually asks you to confirm 2 to 3 transactions (open the container, authorize a temporary wallet for 6 hours, fund upload gas). After that a temporary wallet inside TapeBrowser uploads the files, the files are read back and checked against the chain, and the leftover gas is refunded to your wallet.
  • Resume and reuse: publishing can be paused and resumed after an interruption or restart; files already on chain with the same content are reused, not uploaded again. Unrefunded balances are listed at the bottom of the publish page and can be refunded on their own. The temporary wallet's key is encrypted with the system keychain and never exported.
  • Append-only files: a file that changed needs a new name; only the root index.html can be replaced, at the end. The pre-publish check warns when index.html is larger than one chunk (24,000 bytes), since replacing it takes several transactions and the site is unavailable until it finishes.
  • No more Intel macOS build: from 0.14.0 only Apple silicon is provided. Intel Macs can keep using 0.13.0.

Publish to Container hasn't been fully tested on a live network yet. The open fee and gas are real costs, so try it once with a small site on X Layer first.

TapeBrowser 0.13.0

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 09 Oct 02:10

New in 0.13.0: a safety check for DeWEB sites, local preview for site builders, and a plainer look.

  • Safety check: in the site info panel, click Run check. TapeBrowser reads every file of the site and analyzes it on this machine: the wallet actions it may ask for (approvals, unlimited approvals, Permit, Seaport listings, eth_sign) with file and line, whether hard-coded addresses are contracts or regular wallets, and malicious patterns such as asking for a recovery phrase, drainer kits that look up all your assets before approving, reporting to Telegram bots or Discord webhooks, overriding the wallet's request method, and loading code from external URLs. Nothing is uploaded. The rules were tuned against all 85 sites in the directory. It's a static check, so "nothing found" doesn't prove a site is safe.
  • Local preview and pre-publish check: File → Preview Local Folder (⌘O) opens a folder as tape://local-…/ with the same rules as on-chain sites, and reloads when files change. The panel lists problems before upload: missing index.html, files over 350 chunks, missing references, external scripts, title, logo/cover size, deweb.json, and how many transactions the upload takes.
  • Unverified sites: plain http/https pages show a grey Unverified button left of the address bar, and wallet connect and signing dialogs note that the content isn't on chain.
  • deweb.json: the file site owners use to set a category is renamed from web.json to deweb.json.
  • Plainer look: the new tab page, product site and share link page use a warm off-white background, white cards and thin borders, without gradients or shadows.

TapeBrowser 0.12.0

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 08 Oct 10:13

New in 0.12.0: DeWEB apps as cards, categories, and share links.

  • DeWEB apps: the new tab page now opens on DeWEB apps (formerly All sites), listed first and shown as cards. A toggle switches back to the list.
  • Logos and covers: cards show logo.png / logo.jpg (square, 256×256 recommended, 512×512 max) or cover.png / cover.jpg (16:10, 640×400) from the site's root folder. Each image must be 50 KB or less. Images are read on demand and checked against their on-chain SHA-256. Without one, the card shows the title's first letter on a gradient.
  • Categories: games, finance, tools, social & content, ecosystem and other, with filter chips. TapeBrowser guesses a category locally from the title, description and page content, and marks it as a guess. Site owners can set it with a web.json in the site root: {"category": "game"}.
  • Share links: the site info panel has a Share link, such as https://trytotapeout.github.io/TapeBrowser/open/?4454.0, that works on X, Telegram and WeChat. People with TapeBrowser go straight to the site; everyone else sees a download page.
  • Tipping from the wallet: circuit identities are gone. Tips are a plain BEM transfer from your wallet to the site's container, paying only gas.
  • Help page: address bar examples and notes for site owners moved to Help → Help. The window opens maximized.
  • Fix: with some wallets, the wallet button stayed red after switching to the site's chain.

TapeBrowser 0.11.0

Choose a tag to compare

@boostbob boostbob released this 06 Oct 13:39

New in 0.11.0: circuit identities, tipping, and New sites.

  • Browser identity: sign in with a TapeBrowser circuit (BSC processor 1196 or X Layer processor 281). Each circuit is one identity, and its assets live in the circuit's container. Click the BEM button in the toolbar to pick one. When signed in, the toolbar shows a person icon, the chain and the identity, plus the BEM in its container. You're signed out automatically if the circuit moves or you switch wallets.
  • Tipping: from the site info panel, tip BEM from your identity's container to the site's container. It works only between the same chain, and you can't tip yourself. The container contract charges a small fee (BSC 0.0002 BNB, X Layer 0.0013 OKB), which is shown in the confirm dialog. Every tip is simulated on chain first, so you won't be asked to sign a transaction that would fail. Tips are public on chain.
  • New sites: a new panel on the new tab page lists sites whose home page was first published in the last 7 days, ordered by on-chain publish time.
  • Wider new tab page, and the short chain name is now BSC instead of BNB.
  • If an identity's container isn't opened yet, a link opens tapeout.net in a TapeBrowser tab so you can open it there.
