Overview and Goals
Big World is a 26.1.2. Minecraft Java server with a custom plugin, that aims to create an environment for the natural formation of civilisations, rather than the artificial civilisations found in famous YouTuber events, such as Ish’s Civilisations. The plugin makes Minecraft much more difficult in many ways, but through cooperation, game knowledge and resilience, players are able to overcome all the challenges that the plugin creates. Big World is currently in the testing phase, with the server being open for 4 hour long sessions occurring on Fridays at 17:00 CEST and on Saturdays and Sundays at 16:00 CEST*. Both the test event and real events are intended to last months, since progression is slowed.
*Exact session times may change. Up to date information is in the Discord server.
The main changes of the Big World plugin are:
- Classes, which players level up in order to unlock certain features. Higher level Farmers will have a higher chance of a successful harvest, while higher level Miners get to mine better ores. By limiting how much each individual can do, players are incentivised to work together.
- Overhauled world generation features large continents, tall mountains, vanilla-esque biomes and various types of wasteland biomes, where crops do not grow. Copper, iron, gold and diamonds only generate in exclusive biomes, that can be identified by signal stones, which contain the relevant ore. Due to the scarcity and distances between these biomes, the aim is to make interaction between groups necessary for progression and create genuine diplomatic relations over resources, as opposed to fabricated alliances and conflicts.
- Inventory space is limited to the hotbar and offhand, with the goal to force players to build infrastructure for travel and carefully plan their journeys.
- Increased costs of gear and the addition of food expiration, makes progression require much more resources and organisation. For instance, failing to stockpile food may cause your civilisation to die, if a heat wave occurs.
- Tool quality and overhauled enchanting are meant to rebalance tools, weapons and armor and provide boosts throughout progression.
- Randomly occuring events, such as the heat wave or acid rain are meant to break up the grind and provide additional challenges for civilisations to overcome
- Support for Simple Voice and Distant Horizons (version 3.2.X) , allows players to talk to each other if nearby, and allows players to see the entire world that has ever been loaded (128 chunk radius from spawn and 8 chunk radius around the player)
