Release list
VB Recorder 1.4.4
What's new
- Equalizer per source. A new Equalizer button in the source dialog. Ten bands, from 31 Hz to 16 kHz, each with its own gain, plus a preamp. There are 37 presets: the classic Winamp ones, plus curves for voice, podcast, telephone, AM radio, removing rumble and more. Changing any slider switches the preset to "Custom".
- Noise remover for audio devices. A new Noise Remover button, shown when "Audio Devices" is selected. It uses RNNoise to clean up fans, hiss and background noise from a microphone, with an adjustable intensity.
- Stereo or mono per source. A new Stereo check box, right after the source, checked by default. Unchecking it records that source in mono, mixing its channels into one, while the other sources stay in stereo. It works for devices, processes and executables.
- Show all processes. A new Show All Processes check box, before the Refresh button, lists every program that is open, not only those playing sound right now. This helps with programs that only play sound now and then.
- The test hears everything. With Test on, the equalizer, the noise remover and the stereo setting are heard right away, even while their dialogs are open. Cancel gives back the sound you had before.
- Changes apply during the recording. Editing a source while recording changes its equalizer, noise remover and stereo setting right away, in the same file, as the volume already did.
- Wider volume range. Each source can now go from -30 dB to +30 dB, instead of -20 dB to +20 dB. Sources you already have keep the same volume.
Changes in the source dialog
- The Test button is now the last one, after Equalizer and Noise Remover, since it plays what they set.
How to update
If you use version 1.4 or later, VB Recorder will offer this update by itself when it starts: just say yes. The update also brings a new file, lib\bass_fx.dll, used by the equalizer.
Otherwise, download VBRecorder-x64.zip for 64-bit Windows (most computers) or VBRecorder-x86.zip for 32-bit Windows (it also runs on 64-bit Windows), extract it wherever you like and run VBRecorder.exe. The lib folder must stay next to it. Requires Windows 10 or later.
VB Recorder 1.4.3
What's new
- Start with Windows. A new option in Settings, off by default. VB Recorder stays portable: if you move its folder, it points Windows to the new place the next time it opens.
- Countdown before recording. A new option in Settings, off by default. Three low beeps, one per second, and the recording starts on the high one, like the start of a race. Pressing Stop during the countdown cancels it.
- New global hotkeys to play the recording (or stop playback) and to delete it.
- Bit depth. WAV and AIFF can be recorded in 8, 16, 24 or 32 bits, and FLAC in 8, 16 or 24 bits. The default is still 16 bits.
- More sample rates, from 8000 up to 384000 Hz: 16000, 24000, 88200, 96000, 176400, 192000, 352800 and 384000 are new. The rates above 48000 Hz are for WAV, AIFF and FLAC; MP3, OGG and OPUS go up to 48000 Hz.
- Shutdown is blocked while recording. While a recording is running or paused, Windows asks before shutting down, restarting or signing out, and shows why. If you choose to shut down anyway, the recording is closed properly.
Translations
- Mono and stereo are now translated in every language, instead of always showing "stereo".
- In Simplified Chinese, "channels" now uses the audio term (声道).
- All the new texts are translated into the 27 languages.
How to update
If you use version 1.4 or later, VB Recorder will offer this update by itself when it starts: just say yes.
VB Recorder 1.4.2
What's new
- Refresh button in the source dialog. When adding or editing a source with "Running Processes" selected, a Refresh button right after the process list reads the list again. Programs opened after the dialog show up without closing it or restarting VB Recorder. If the selected process is still running, it stays selected.
Fixes
- After deleting a recording, the window was left with nothing focused, and the keyboard did nothing until you switched windows with Alt+Tab. This happened because the Delete button, which had the focus, is disabled once there is no recording left. Now, whenever a focused button is disabled, the focus goes to the Record button. The focus is also checked when the window becomes active again.
How to update
If you use version 1.4 or 1.4.1, VB Recorder will offer this update by itself when it starts: just say yes.
VB Recorder 1.4.1
VB Recorder now speaks 28 languages
19 new translations: Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Czech, Danish, Esperanto, Finnish, Galician, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Slovak, Slovenian, Thai and Turkish.
They join Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian and Vietnamese. The Vietnamese translation was also updated by nguyenninhhoang. Thank you!
What else changed
- When Windows is in a language that has no translation, the program now opens in English instead of Portuguese. You can still choose any language in the settings.
- If a translation is missing a text, that text shows up in English too.
How to update
If you use version 1.4, VB Recorder will offer this update by itself when it starts: just say yes.
VB Recorder 1.4
VB Recorder is now written in C++. The windows, dialogs, hotkeys and VBRecorder.ini stay the same: if you already use the program, you will find everything in the same place.
What's new
- Change sources while recording. Add, edit or remove sources without stopping the recording. A new source joins in sync with the others, and editing a source changes its volume right away. With separate files, a source added midway gets a file that starts with silence from the beginning, and the file of a removed source goes on in silence and picks the source up again if you add it back, so all files stay in sync. Removing every source keeps the recording going in silence, ready for new ones.
- Continue the last recording. After stopping, the file is ready to be played or opened in any editor, and the new Continue Last Recording button goes on recording in the same file, as if it had only been paused. The Pause / Continue hotkey and the tray menu do the same. With MP3, OGG and OPUS, the part already recorded is encoded again.
- Record a program by its executable name. Type the name (game.exe, for example), even with the program closed: it is recorded whenever it runs, however many times it is opened and closed and however many copies are open. Great for gameplay that starts in the middle of a recording.
- Automatic updates. When it starts, VB Recorder checks for a new version and offers to install it: it downloads the right one for your Windows (32 or 64 bits), updates itself and opens again. It can also be checked from the settings, and turned off. This is the first version with the updater, so this time you still need to download it by hand.
- No more stutters. Recording now has a real buffer, and the buffer size in the settings applies to every source. The stutters that appeared when the computer or the recorded program was not in use (and Windows put it in power saving mode) are gone, for processes, sound cards and loopbacks alike.
- Sources that drop out come back by themselves. A sound card that goes to sleep, is unplugged or changes format, or a process capture that stops, is opened again automatically, in sync.
- 32-bit and 64-bit. There is a version for each Windows.
- Much smaller. The executable is under 1 MB.
- While recording, the computer does not go to sleep, also on computers with Modern Standby.
- When you stop, all the audio captured up to that moment goes to the file.
Which one to download
VBRecorder-x64.zip: 64-bit Windows (most computers).VBRecorder-x86.zip: 32-bit Windows. It also runs on 64-bit Windows.
Extract it wherever you like and run VBRecorder.exe. The lib folder must stay next to it. Requires Windows 10 or later.
If you already use an earlier version, your VBRecorder.ini keeps working: just put it in the new folder.
VB Recorder 1.3
A settings window
We now have a settings window. In it, besides changing the hotkeys, you can
change:
- The program language, independently of the Windows language. The change
applies right away, without closing and reopening. - Whether the program starts minimized to the system tray.
- Whether the program minimizes to the tray or closes right away when you
press Esc. - Whether the window stays always on top of the screen, without hiding
behind other windows. - The buffer size. This one is for those who told me the audio crackles on a
busier computer. With a bigger buffer, the program gets some slack to take the
strain. And don't worry: a bigger buffer doesn't mean more delay, the sound
still comes out right away. If you have no crackles at all, you don't need to
touch it.
Also: the program now asks before closing if you are recording. Imagine losing a
recording because of an accidental Esc?
Languages
Still the same nine: Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, English,
Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian and Vietnamese. The Vietnamese
translation is by nguyenninhhoang.
Want to translate it into your language? You don't need to know how to program.
The instructions are in the project README.
How to use
Download VBRecorder.exe below and run it. There is nothing to install: it is a
single file, and it creates VBRecorder.ini with your settings next to it.
If you already use an earlier version, just replace the executable. Your
settings are kept.
Requirements
- Windows 10 or later, 64-bit.
- For per-process capture, Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020) or later.
- No additional drivers or virtual cables needed.
VB Recorder 1.2
VB Recorder now speaks other languages
The program automatically starts in the language of the Windows interface.
There is nothing to configure: if your Windows is in English, VB Recorder opens
in English.
Languages available in this version:
- Brazilian Portuguese
- European Portuguese
- English
- Spanish
- French
- German
- Italian
- Russian
- Vietnamese
If Windows is in a language that has no translation yet, the program shows up
in Brazilian Portuguese.
Thanks
The Vietnamese translation was made by nguyenninhhoang. Thank you for
the contribution!
Want to translate it into your language?
You don't need to know how to program, nor change the code. Copy the
locale/vbrecorder.pot file, translate the texts with a program such as Poedit
and send it. Anything left untranslated keeps showing in Portuguese, so you can
start a little at a time. The instructions are in the project README.
How to use
Download VBRecorder.exe below and run it. There is nothing to install: it is a
single file, and it creates VBRecorder.ini with your settings next to it.
If you already use version 1.1, just replace the executable. Your settings are
kept.
Requirements
- Windows 10 or later.
- For per-process capture, Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020) or later.
- No additional drivers or virtual cables needed.
VB Recorder 1.1
First published version of VB Recorder. Version 1.0 existed, but it was never
released, so everything starts here.
What's new in version 1.1
- You can now test the audio devices before recording, to check whether the
sound is to your liking with the volume you set. - You can listen to the recording after recording, and delete it if it
did not turn out well, from the program itself or from the tray menu. - New Open Recordings Folder button in the main window.
- Support for the AIFF format.
Fixes
- The WAV format is now recorded at the right quality, 16-bit. It used
to go out as 32-bit, and nobody knew, not even me. - VB Recorder no longer shows up in the process list when choosing a process
as a source. It made no sense: how would we record the sound of the recorder
itself?
