Easter eggs
WM Keyboard hides a few small surprises. This page spoils all of them, so turn back now if you'd rather stumble into them yourself.
None of them ever touch the text you're typing: every egg is a card, a caption, or a badge that sits beside your typing, never inside it. They all run entirely on the device, and none of them phones home about being found.
On the anniversary of the day you installed the app, the settings home screen grows a Keyboard birthday card under the "Your active keyboard" heading, telling you how many years it's been. The first time you open settings that day you also get a toast and a shower of confetti. The card then stays for the rest of the day and is gone by midnight, with no dismissing needed.
The date comes from Android's own record of when the app was installed, so a full uninstall and reinstall starts the count over. The confetti respects Reduce motion (Accessibility): with it on, you get the card and the toast, and nothing moves.
Tap the version row in About seven times. It's the same ritual Android's own developer options use. From the fourth tap a toast counts you down. The seventh opens Keycap catcher, a small arcade game. Keycaps rain from the top of the screen, you drag a spacebar-shaped paddle to catch them, and every catch speeds things up a little. Three missed keys ends the round. Your best score is remembered on the device, and nowhere else.
Roughly one generation in five hundred, the password generator adds a second caption under its entropy estimate. The caption quotes "correct horse battery staple", then credits xkcd 936 for the point that length beats symbols. That's a citation of the famous comic rather than a suggestion. The quoted words are never part of the generated output, and the generator itself is untouched.
Sooner or later every QR scanner meets that link. The QR & barcode scanner knows Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" in any of YouTube's usual link shapes. Decode one and the result card adds a line above the payload: 🎵 Rickroll detected. Never gonna scan you up. The code still scans, copies, and opens like any other. You just walk in warned.
The typing speed test quietly hands out four badges:
| Badge | How to earn it |
|---|---|
| 100 wpm club | Finish a run at 100 words per minute or faster |
| Flawless run | No wrong, extra, or missed characters in a full run (short runs don't count) |
| Quick brown fox | Finish a quote that uses every letter of the alphabet |
| 50 runs | Finish fifty typing tests |
Earned badges appear on the results screen, with a New accent on the run that unlocks them. The full list lives in Tools / Typing speed test / Achievements, locked ones included, so you know what to chase. Clear records on the same screen wipes the badges along with the bests and history.
Tip
Badges survive app updates, but like everything else the keyboard stores, they don't survive uninstalling the app.
On the Morse code layout, key S, O, S as three consecutive letters and the suggestion strip briefly acknowledges: ··· −−− ··· received. Help is not on the way. It fires once for as long as the keyboard is running, and it retires by itself after five seconds. The live sequence readout outranks it the whole time, so the note only surfaces in the pauses between letters, and switching field or language clears it early. Either way, the letters commit to your field exactly as typed.
