@zer0ducksgiven zer0ducksgiven released this 07 Oct 20:29

Pickups (toggle: P)

  • SM64's yellow, red and blue coins, Power Stars, Metal Cap, Wing Cap and a temporary invincibility star appear at random
    around Mario, streamed in as he moves. Everything about how they look is read from your ROM (models, textures,
    animation); nothing ships with NG64. The caps and the star play their own SM64 music while active, then your music
    (or silence, if you had it off) returns. Cars can't interact with them yet.

Enemies (toggle: O)

  • Goombas, bob-ombs and koopas spawn around Mario in roughly SM64's proportions, capped to a reasonable number, as the
    ROM's own models with their animations, running the game's own behaviour code (ported from the decompilation: walking,
    chasing, jumping, fuses, explosions, koopas losing and chasing their shells, the attack and knock-back rules, Mario's
    hit boxes). Cars hit them like a slide kick (the car takes a small dent), and a bob-omb goes off at a car's touch: its
    blast dents the car and throws it up and away.
  • Bob-ombs can be picked up, carried and thrown, as in SM64.
  • When the player drives off in a car and leaves Mario behind, pickups and enemies spawn and stay active around that car
    too, with the ground streamed in under them.

Stars and red coins

  • Collecting a Power Star plays SM64's star dance and jingle, with the sparkles and the celebration star.
  • Red coin courses as in SM64: eight red coins with their orange counters and rising sounds; the eighth makes a star
    appear from its marker with the star-spawn jingle.
  • Metal Mario uses the ROM's metal texture; the Wing Cap's wings have their proper cut-out feathers.

Settings app

  • A small collapsible "NG64 Settings" panel appears with the HUD: pickups and enemies switches, a music picker and a volume
    slider. Settings are saved in ng64settings.txt next to the helper.
  • The music list has previous/next buttons and follows the song keys; a scale slider sizes the SM64 HUD.

Download NG64-0.2.0.zip (installer plus the files for installing by hand), or just NG64-Setup.exe.

Update notice

  • When a newer NG64 has been published on GitHub, the game says so a few seconds after you start playing. The helper checks GitHub's latest release when it starts and every 12 hours (a single request, nothing else is sent). To turn it off, create an empty no-update-check.txt next to ng64helper.exe.

Fire

  • Mario catches fire from the flames of burning vehicles (a fuel leak that ignites, a wreck on fire), on the bodywork or low down near the ground. He plays SM64's burning pain animation, runs about in flames, and loses health as in SM64 (about three wedges per burn, and a burn can cost a life). Water puts him out.

Water

  • Fixed Mario floating several metres above BeamNG water (Gridmap's pool, the lakes on West Coast USA). A water block's surface is at its own height, not the top of its box. Mario also no longer swims in the air under a lake's bed.

Spin throw

  • Hold Y (Triangle, Switch X, or E on the keyboard) next to a car and Mario grabs it like Bowser's tail, holding it out in front of him at his gloves. Circle the stick to spin it round him (the keyboard winds up by itself), then let go to throw: the car flies far at an angle, tumbling, and the faster the spin the further it goes. Tapping Y still lifts and throws as before.
  • The spinning car collides: if it hits another vehicle, a wall or the ground the spin ends and the car drops, and whatever it hit is dented and knocked away.
  • On a wrecked car, holding Y spins its main body even when a loose wheel or panel is nearer (a tap still lifts the nearest part); the loose parts stay where they lie.

@zer0ducksgiven zer0ducksgiven released this 04 Oct 14:00

Hotfix: fixes a DualSense-specific issue where the controller wasn't detected through DirectInput (Windows lists it as a "first person" device rather than a gamepad). Other PlayStation, Switch Pro and generic pads are unaffected.

Please report any other controller issues as I don't have a Dualshock 4/Pro Controller to test.

The helper's log now also notes the first controller button presses with their DirectInput numbers, to help with controller.ini remapping.

Download NG64-0.1.3.zip (installer plus the files for installing by hand), or just NG64-Setup.exe.

@zer0ducksgiven zer0ducksgiven released this 04 Oct 13:42

Controllers

  • PlayStation (DualShock 4 / DualSense), Nintendo Switch Pro and generic DirectInput controllers now work, alongside Xbox pads. Buttons follow the Xbox layout by position (the bottom button jumps on every pad). A controller.ini next to the helper can remap any button or stick; see the README.

Water

  • Mario swims in the water BeamNG draws (lakes, the sea) on every map, instead of walking through it as if it weren't there. BeamNG's rivers aren't covered yet.

Music

  • Fixed the hitching and stuttering, which was worst on demanding maps. The audio thread now keeps a buffer ahead and runs at audio priority, so a busy game no longer starves it (63 dropouts in 40 s with every core busy, none now).
  • Fixed the music getting stuck on one song after a few changes with the song selector.

Vehicle selector and tray

  • Mario now has a picture in the vehicle selector, drawn from your ROM when you install (nothing is shipped).
  • While the helper runs, a small Mario-head icon sits in the notification area. It's taken from your ROM too.

Fixes

  • The uninstaller now removes everything it installed (it couldn't find BeamNG's mods folder before) and the picture and cache NG64 made.
  • Looking for controllers no longer stalls the helper for ~150 ms every few seconds.

Download NG64-0.1.2.zip (installer plus the files for installing by hand), or just NG64-Setup.exe.

  • The camera's up/down now matches BeamNG's: push the right stick up to look up.
  • BeamNG's interaction crosshair no longer appears when you move the camera as Mario.
