Bodybuilders

Overview

Bodybuilders is a 2D sidescrolling puzzle-platformer in which the character plays a robot head that can attach and detach itself from a variety of torsos and legs scattered throughout the levels. Each part has its own unique abilities that are either necessary or optimal for the completion of each level, requiring the player to improvise and optimise their way through the game.

Narrative

Many centuries into the future, humanity has found a way to upload their consciousness into machines and has been living in these forms for many years now. Unfortunately, a virus (the main villain) has begun to take over, spreading from a central hub with the intent on corrupting and enslaving all of robotkind. You play as one of the few robots that has been able to escape the corruption up until now (running on hardware that is much harder to corrupt). You must travel through the overgrown ruins of civilisation's now neglected cities, overcoming the threat of possessed or insane machines in their facilities, and strike down the root of the corruption. The problem is that your body was damaged during the spread of the corruption, and you will have to scavenge for a variety of parts that allow you to advance through different challenges and puzzles, swapping them out as you go. Adapt, Improvise and Overcome.

Our Design Pillars

• Adapt, Improvise and Overcome
• Linear levels and learning
• Modular construction and deconstruction of the player character in-game

Our Target Audience

Our target audience is 10 to 40-year-olds who have had at least some prior experience with platformers and puzzle games in the past. Basic jumping and movement will be expected, but each puzzle element and ability will have its own level structured around it, allowing for people who understand the basics to pick up the skills they need. It may feature some post-apocalyptic themes and dark humour that could potentially deter a younger audience.

Persona

Michael - Male - 16 - Plays platformers proficiently on his PC and is looking for something different, but still in his comfort zone. Through Bodybuilder's attachment system, Michael will have access to a variety of ways to play, giving him plenty of unique platforming experiences, while adhering to the essence of the genre, as a game that lets the player use their mastery and build up flow as they race through the levels swiftly.

Sarah - Female - 24 - Sarah likes strong narratives, but also cute characters. G1ZM0, the game's protagonist fits this role and acts as a point of stabilisation into a dark, yet hopeful narrative.

Callum - Male 30 - Callum has always enjoyed adventure and arcade games. For him, Bodybuilders will condense the exploration and sometimes puzzling nature of the adventure genre, with the fast-paced and varied challenges of the arcade. While the core mechanics and rules of the game remain the same, he will always be able to find new and diverse ways to approach challenges.
