Recording BlackHole with Pro Tools

By using BlackHole as the Playback Engine on your Pro Tools, you can record audio that's been routed from your Mac or another application directly into a Pro Tools session.

This guide walks you through setting up Pro Tools to record audio from BlackHole. Once configured, you can capture system audio, browser audio, livestreams, or any other audio source that's already being routed through BlackHole.

Before You Begin

This guide assumes that BlackHole has already been configured as the output device for the audio you want to record. For example, your web browser, media player, or another application should already be sending audio to BlackHole before you begin recording in Pro Tools.

1. Open the Playback Engine Settings

Configure settings by clicking Setup > Playback Engine

Open Playback Engine

2. Select BlackHole as the Playback Engine

Select BlackHole 2ch as your Playback Engine

Select Playback Engine

3. Create a New Track

Go to Track > New

New Track

4. Arm the Track for Recording

Enable Track Recording on your new track

Arm Recording

5. Start Recording

Click on the Record button then press Play (spacebar) to start recording.

Start Recording

In this guide, we're recording audio from a YouTube video whose output has been set to BlackHole 2ch. These same steps work with any application or audio source that's routed through BlackHole.

Troubleshooting

No audio is being recorded

  • Make sure BlackHole 2ch is selected as the Playback Engine.
  • Verify that your audio track is record-enabled.
  • Confirm that the track's input is assigned to the correct BlackHole input (such as Input 1–2) if required by your session.
  • Ensure your source application is actively sending audio to BlackHole.

BlackHole doesn't appear as a Playback Engine

  • Close and reopen Pro Tools after installing BlackHole.
  • If BlackHole still isn't listed, restart your Mac and launch Pro Tools again.

Pro Tools doesn't have microphone permission

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
  2. Navigate to Privacy & SecurityMicrophone.
  3. Make sure Pro Tools is allowed to access the microphone.
  4. Restart Pro Tools if necessary.
