Getting Started

Version Parity: This guide applies to both Minecraft 1.20.1 (Forge) and Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge).

1. Craft it

The radar has a default crafting recipe made of vanilla items:

Row Slots
1 iron ingot, lightning rod, iron ingot
2 glass pane, compass, glass pane
3 iron ingot, redstone, iron ingot

(Pack makers may have disabled or replaced the default recipes; check JEI.) A fresh radar is tier 0. Raise its tier with modules, see Tiers and Modules.

2. Charge it

The radar stores Forge Energy (FE): 20000 FE by default, plus 10000 per installed battery addon. Charge it with any charger that supports FE items (for example Mekanism chargers). By default there is no charging speed limit. Its item bar shows the stored energy and the tooltip shows tier, FE and addons.

3. Hold it

The radar works only while it is in your main hand or offhand. Not held means off: no scan, no cost. Every few seconds (5 by default) it pays a scan cost in FE; higher tiers are cheaper per scan. While you hold it the display shows a rotating sweep, your heading is always up, and blips appear where something is detected.

If the radar is in your offhand and the main hand uses a two-handed item (bow, crossbow, spear, spyglass, brush, goat horn, a charged crossbow, or an item the pack tagged as two-handed), the offhand radar switches off until you stop.

4. Raise it

Hold right-click to raise the device to your face. A text line shows the blip nearest to where you are looking: name, distance in metres and compass direction. While raised, the mouse wheel zooms the display range (see Display and Controls).

Sneak + right-click opens the addon menu (see Addons).

5. Read the screen

  • Blips are small icons; far or out-of-range ones sit on the rim with an arrow.
  • Names show as ??? until you get close enough; far positions are fuzzy (less so on higher tiers).
  • A dimmed blip with a check mark was already found.
  • A small up or down arrow marks blips more than 4 blocks above or below you.
  • NO BATTERY: the radar is out of energy. Charge it.
  • NO SIGNAL: the scan could not run (not enough FE for the scan, or a script jammed it). Static noise is shown.
  • Status LED: green is fine, amber means below 20 % energy, blinking red means no signal.
  • Your last death is always marked on the radar (same dimension) until you walk to within 8 blocks of it while carrying a radar.

When you get close to a story target while carrying a radar of a high enough tier, you hear a chime and see "Signal acquired: name". That target is now found.
