Course Support

You are not alone in IT-140. Live support, community help, and self-help resources are available to help you understand course concepts, complete assignments and projects, use course tools, solve problems, and build the skills you need to succeed. Some resources are available 24/7, so you can get help when you need it.

Use the sections below to choose the type of support that best fits what you need and when you need it.

Table of Contents

Live Help

Help with IT-140 coursework is available 24/7 from the university Academic Support Center (ASC). Watch this short video or read this guide to learn about ASC services and how to navigate the Academic Support website.

Start Here for IT-140

These services are the best places to start when you need help with IT-140 coursework, programming, course tools, or technical problems.

Office Hours

IT Basics Office Hours are best for asking questions about IT-140 coursework, assignments, projects, or course tools. Office Hours are hosted by SNHU Learning Support Specialists (LSS), who are familiar with IT-140 and can access course content in D2L Brightspace, zyBooks, and Codio.

See the Office Hours Schedule for days and times. If the schedule opens at the top of the page, scroll down to find IT Basics Office Hours.

You can also book a session and retrieve session recordings.

Tip

Attend Office Hours live when you have a specific question. Office Hours are student-driven, so the topics covered depend on the questions asked by students who attend. If no students attend, there may be no recording. You may book a session without attending to access any recording that is created, but it may not cover the question you need answered.

Workshops

The IT-140: Intro to Python Workshop is best for reviewing IT-140 topics and practicing course concepts, with time available for questions. Workshops are hosted by SNHU Learning Support Specialists (LSS), who are familiar with IT-140 and can access course content in D2L Brightspace, zyBooks, and Codio.

See the Workshop Schedule for days and times. If the schedule opens at the top of the page, scroll down to find IT 140 - Intro to Python Workshop.

You can also book a session and retrieve session recordings.

Tip

Book the first IT-140: Intro to Python workshop session each week (Weeks 1–8). The IT-140 workshops offered during the same week cover the same planned material. Even if you cannot attend the session you booked, you will be able to retrieve the recording and watch the presentation on demand.

Tutoring

24/7 Drop-in Tutoring is best for general Python and programming questions when you need help right away.

Tutors work for Tutor.com, not SNHU directly. They know Python and programming but may not know IT-140 specifics or its assignments. Tutors cannot access course content in D2L Brightspace, zyBooks, or Codio. The help you receive may therefore depend on how much information you provide.

For IT-140, select:

  • Topic: Computer Science and Programming
  • Subject: Programming: Python
  • Voice-Chat: Select this option if you would like to speak with a tutor. Voice chat may not always be available during off-peak hours.
  • Enter your question: Provide enough information for a tutor who knows Python but may not know IT-140 or its assignments. If your work has an assignment repository, include the repository URL. Otherwise, provide the relevant requirements from the assignment guidelines and rubric.

Technical Support

The IT Service Desk is best for technical problems with university systems, software, or course technology that you cannot resolve using the course instructions or self-help resources. Use the IT Service Desk link in your D2L Brightspace course to request assistance.

When contacting the Service Desk, provide enough information to help the support agent understand and reproduce the problem. Include:

  • Course: IT-140
  • Activity: The lab, assignment, project, or other activity you are working on
  • Problem: A clear description of what happened, including any error messages
  • Repository URL: Include the GitHub repository URL if the problem involves a course repository
  • CVD log files: Include the relevant Codio Virtual Desktop log files if the problem involves the CVD

The more specific information you provide, the easier it will be for the support agent to identify the problem and help you resolve it.

Additional Academic Support

These services can help you build academic skills that are useful in IT-140 and future courses.

Academic Coaching

Academic coaching is best for developing general academic skills such as reading comprehension, organization, time management, critical thinking, and problem solving. These skills support programming by helping you understand requirements, break problems into smaller steps, stay organized, and work through challenges systematically.

Academic Coaches do not provide help with specific course topics or assignments.

Written Feedback

Written feedback is best for getting feedback on the clarity, organization, and effectiveness of your writing.

In IT-140, this service may be useful for discussion posts, the IDE Features reflection in Module Two, and Project One Theme. Strong writing skills also support programming by helping you explain technical ideas, document your work, communicate design decisions, and write clear comments and instructions.

Peer Groups

Academic Support peer groups are best for connecting with other students, sharing academic experiences, and building confidence and effective learning habits. Peer Groups are led by Academic Coaches.

There is currently no IT-140 or programming peer group. See the Peer Group Schedule for currently available groups in other subject areas.

Community Help

Community help gives you a place to ask questions, learn from questions other students have asked, and report problems or suggestions. Choose the option that best matches your question so it reaches the right audience.

General Questions

The General Questions discussion in your D2L Brightspace course is the best place for questions that your instructor needs to answer or that may depend on your instructor's course policies or preferences. It is also the best place for questions about course content that is not hosted in GitHub.

Use General Questions for topics such as:

  • D2L Brightspace, zyBooks, or SENSE
  • Assignment submission or grading questions
  • Late work, extensions, or due dates
  • Instructor preferences or expectations
  • Questions that apply specifically to your section of IT-140

Check the existing General Questions posts before creating a new one. Another student may have already asked the same question.

GitHub Discussions

GitHub Discussions are best for questions about course GitHub repositories, repository instructions, the course IDE, the Codio Virtual Desktop, and other technical processes that are shared across IT-140 sections.

Before posting a new question, search or browse the repository's Discussions to see whether your question has already been answered. If not, start a new discussion and provide enough information for others to understand what you are trying to do and where you are having difficulty.

Questions about grading, late work, due dates, instructor preferences, or other matters that depend on your instructor should be posted in General Questions instead.

GitHub Issues

GitHub Issues are best for reporting a problem with a course repository or its instructions, or suggesting an improvement. Before creating a new issue, review the existing issues to see whether the problem or suggestion has already been reported.

If you create a new issue, clearly describe what you found, where you found it, and what you expected instead. Issues help the course team identify problems and improve course resources for current and future students.

Do not include grades, personal information, or other private information in GitHub Discussions or Issues.

Self Help

Course Wiki Pages

Course repository wikis provide supplemental explanations and reference materials to help you understand course tools, concepts, workflows, assignments, and projects. Use them when you need help understanding a requirement or process, working with course files and tools, testing or debugging your work, troubleshooting a problem, or finding the right source of support.

Always start with the course or activity instructions in its README.md file. The wiki pages provide additional help and explanations but do not replace the current assignment or project instructions, Guidelines and Rubric in D2L Brightspace assignments, or directions from your instructor.

Academic Resource Center

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) provides tutorials, videos, and other self-help resources for course concepts, academic skills, and university technology. For IT-140, these resources can help you review Python and programming concepts, learn how to use Brightspace and other student technology, and find the academic support service that best fits your needs.

Shapiro Library

The Shapiro Library provides research resources to help you find reliable information for your coursework. The IT-140 Library Guide can help you locate resources related to the course, conduct research, evaluate information, and properly cite sources when an assignment or project requires outside information.
