Best Practice

Tips from playing with the mod. None of this is required; it just saves time and coal.

Finding ores

  • Look down while you walk. The cut shows what lies in your view direction. Walking a straight line over a mountain shows you a slice of it.
  • Turn slowly in a circle at one spot to scan everything around you. A full turn takes a few seconds and covers a lot of ground.
  • Use a Finder Bundle once you know what you want. Put one iron nugget in and only iron flashes; that is much faster to spot than reading colors. See Finder Bundle.
  • Zoom in to dig, zoom out to search. On Gold and better CRTs, B switches: 64 or 128 blocks wide to find something, 32 to see exactly how deep it is.

Digging to a target

  1. Find the ore or cave and face it.
  2. With a Compass module, press K. The cut now stays in that direction, even when you look down at your pickaxe.
  3. Dig. Whenever the needle turns green and clinks, and the CRT's antennas light up, you are facing the target again.
  4. A Depth Gauge tells you the Y level of the target, so you know when to stop going down.

Digging diagonally works: the compass locks any angle, not only north, east, south or west.

Saving coal

  • Press V to hide the cut when you don't need it. It only burns while shown.
  • A Coal Pouch (any bundle) lets the CRT eat things you don't need: sticks, saplings, wooden tools, a lava bucket (worth 12.5 coals, and you get the bucket back). A coal block is 10 coals in one slot.
  • Beware: the pouch eats everything that burns, enchanted wooden tools too. Keep them out of it.

Interference

Lit portals (nether portal, end portal, end gateway) within about 6 blocks and endermen within 8 blocks put snow in the picture. An angry enderman disturbs twice as much. A Lightning Rod module removes three quarters of it; the Netherite CRT ignores it completely. A sudden burst of snow in a dark cave can be a warning: something tall is near.

Exploring

  • A chest in a Finder Bundle makes every block with an inventory flash: chests in dungeons, mineshafts and ruins, barrels, furnaces in villages under the ground.
  • The Spyglass module (J) shows the next picture below the normal one. Good for finding the deep caves and lava lakes near the bottom of the world.
  • With the Netherite CRT you see mobs through walls. Red dots pulse; they are hostile.

Upgrade order

Stone → Copper → Iron → Gold → Diamond → Netherite, and every upgrade keeps the fuel and the modules. Iron is the big jump (color, twice as far, two slots). If you are short on diamonds, the Gold CRT is a fine place to stay for a while.
