Release list
v0.9.18
Download: 0-SpecOpsTheLineVR.zip (first file below), extract it anywhere and run install.bat. If you already have the mod, it updates itself at start-up.
- Hostage scene: lean out of cover and shoot. In that scene the game keeps Walker in cover against the container. When you lean out to aim, his animation takes him around the edge of the container, but the view, your hands and your gun stayed on your real head behind the wall: you saw the container and had to walk out of cover in your room, and then the gun didn't fire. Now when you lean out of cover (about 20 cm sideways or standing up), the view, hands and gun go with Walker around the edge, so you can see the enemies and shoot without leaving your spot. This works in every cover, not only in that scene. It's the new option "Lean out of cover" in the Basic tab of the menu (
coverlean, on by default). - The gun no longer refuses to fire with Walker facing a wall. With Walker's body a step from a wall in front of him, the game raised the gun and blocked both aiming and firing, even if the gun in your hands was already past the wall: you pulled the trigger and nothing happened. In VR the shot leaves from the gun in your hands, so this block is now skipped (a barrel that is really inside the wall still hits the wall).
- Note for the hostage scene: for the first few seconds the game itself doesn't let you fire, and after about 12 seconds the hostage dies and the checkpoint reloads: lean out right away and aim to the right of the container.
Your settings are kept; the new option is on by default and can be turned off in the menu.
v0.9.17
Download: 0-SpecOpsTheLineVR.zip (first file below), extract it anywhere and run install.bat. If you already have the mod, it updates itself at start-up.
- Fix: crash at the hostage scene. The game could crash with a fatal error right when the hostage scene started. The bug was in the mod, not in the game, and came in with v0.9.4 (18 October), when the right eye got its own view state (fewer objects popping between the eyes): at the controller change of that scene the mod could mistake another object for the game camera and then write the right eye's view state into the wrong memory. Versions up to 0.9.3 didn't have that write, so they didn't crash there. Now the camera is recognised only if it really belongs to the player controller, and that write only happens on the real player.
- Fix: your head no longer turns 360° without Walker. The game only turns Walker toward where you look while he walks: standing still, turning your head past 45° turned the view but not his body, so turning around you saw his shoulders and his hidden neck. Now Walker turns with you even when standing still. In cover, during the game's animated moves, on turrets and vehicles he still faces where the game wants.
Your settings are kept.
v0.9.16
Download: 0-SpecOpsTheLineVR.zip (first file below), extract it anywhere and run install.bat. If you already have the mod, it updates itself at start-up.
- Crouch for real: crouch in your room (about 30 cm) and Walker crouches too, with the game's own crouched pose and animations: knees bent, lower behind low walls. Stand up and he stands. It stays on while you walk, shoot, reload and aim, and you can still duck into cover with A. Behind a low wall, shots at chest and head height now go over you (keep your hands down: raised arms can still be hit). On by default; you can turn it off in the in-headset menu (Basic, "Crouch for real").
- No more headless body or inside view: looking down while crouched no longer shows Walker's neck in front of you, and kneeling or squatting very low no longer puts your eyes inside his body: the body now lowers with you, feet still on the ground.
Your settings are kept.
v0.9.15
Download: 0-SpecOpsTheLineVR.zip (first file below), extract it anywhere and run install.bat. If you already have the mod, it updates itself at start-up.
- Menu pointer with Virtual Desktop (VDXR): the in-headset settings menu now has a real laser beam, like on SteamVR, and it points where the controller points. Before, there was only a small dot and you had to hold the controller flat to reach the menu.
- Installer finds any copy of the game:
install.bat(and uninstall, rollback, reset_settings, collect_logs) now looks forSpecOpsTheLine.exeeverywhere: Steam libraries, GOG / Epic / other installs, the usual game folders and, if needed, every drive. If it finds more than one copy it asks which one. You can still pass the folder:install.bat "D:\Games\Spec Ops The Line". - The download zip is now the first file in the release list.
Your settings are kept.
v0.9.14
- Virtual Desktop without SteamVR (VDXR): new OpenXR backend. With the new default
runtime auto, the mod uses Virtual Desktop's own OpenXR runtime whenever the Virtual Desktop Streamer is running, otherwise SteamVR as before. Through VDXR the game holds 120 Hz on Godlike. If you connect the headset to VD after starting the game, the mod switches to VDXR by itself. - Meta Quest Link through OpenXR is available with
runtime openxr(in-headset menu, Basic tab), but it is experimental:autokeeps Link players on SteamVR for now. - Green aim marker is back on by default. You can turn it off in the in-headset menu (Basic, "Green aim marker").
- Virtual Desktop notices fixed: no more "72 Hz / High quality" advice when you use VDXR. The "headset at half rate" warning no longer appears in menus and loading screens, where the game limits the frame rate on purpose.
- Non-Steam copies of the game: the mod now starts there too, with a notice in the headset (untested).
Your existing settings are kept. Only options still on the old defaults change (runtime steamvr → auto, marker off → on).
v0.9.13
- Squad orders, stun grenade tutorial (chapter 1): the order now works there. When the game forbids attack orders, the enemy you look at is still passed to the game for the stun order.
- Squad orders are easier to aim with the head: tolerance 7 degrees (was 3).
- Heal orders: looking at a downed Adams or Lugo gives the heal order, even with an enemy next to them.
v0.9.12
- Executions work again: B executes a downed enemy wherever you look, also straight from above (the "Meleed enemies will stand up again / look down and press B" tutorial in chapter 1). The mod had broken the game's look-down check.
- The execution assist uses the game's own rule to find executable enemies and leaves cover before executing.
v0.9.11
Fixes from the first tester reports.
- Hurt effects (blood at the edges, flashes) now line up in both eyes. Before, they were drawn with a big difference between the eyes: doubled, "cross-eyed", and covering the aim.
- HUD default size 0.4 (was 0.5), closer to the centre of the view; 0.35 available in the settings menu.
- Squad orders (right grip, the game's "RB"): look at the enemy and release. The sniper on the banner in chapter 1 now works. When the game itself does not allow orders yet, a message says so.
- Reload is the simple one by default (left hand on the magazine, pull down); physical reload is still in the settings menu.
- Low cover (crate at the start of chapter 1): the view stays behind the edge instead of above it.
- Body: shoulder and collar no longer fill the view when you turn your head in cover.
- Very high SteamVR resolution (4096 per eye): the image keeps the right proportions.
- Game window focus: the controls work without clicking on the game window first.
- Messages in the headset no longer stop appearing after the first one.
Tip: with Quest 3, 72 or 90 Hz and SteamVR resolution at 100% run much smoother than 120 Hz.
SpecOpsTheLineVR 0.9.10
A big full-VR update: in-headset settings, a more physical body and hands, and many fixes found in a complete review of the mod. If you have 0.9.x the mod updates itself at the next game start, or download SpecOpsTheLineVR.zip below and run install.bat again. Your specopsvr.ini is kept.
In-headset settings menu
- Opens by itself on the game's main menu: point the controller laser and pull the trigger, PLAY closes it.
- Basic tab with the main options and a short explanation, Advanced with every option of the ini, Controls with the full control list. Changes apply at once and are saved.
- Virtual Desktop users get a notice with the streamer settings to change (SSW, refresh rate).
Aiming and HUD
- Laser beam aim aid; the green marker is now off by default.
- Wrist HUD: ammo, weapon and health on your support-hand wrist.
- Laser pointer on the game's menus (trigger to click).
- Shots follow the barrel with the game's own spread, scaled by stance (tighter with two hands or at the sights).
Hands and body
- Two-handed aim with pistols and rifles: the support hand wraps the gun hand on pistols.
- Rope, zipline, vault, pick-ups and other animated moves: your arms and body follow the animation.
- Hip holster: grip at the hip (or over the shoulder) for the next weapon.
- Hand proximity vibration and grab-to-use on interactive objects.
- Left-handed mode swaps the arms (follows the
handoption). - Room-scale: walking in your room now really moves Walker.
Squad orders and executions
- Squad orders select the target directly; you can also point with the support hand.
- Executions on downed enemies are easier to trigger.
Comfort and scenes
- No first-person flashes around the helicopter prologue and other scripted scenes.
- Seated height reference; silent recenters.
- Experimental stereo cutscene screen (
cinema3d on).
Audio and stability
- Game audio follows the Windows default device: switching to the headset's audio while the game runs works.
- Controllers no longer go dead when SteamVR or Link keeps the input focus (main menu over Link).
- Game resolution is reset to 100% at start (the game saved the last dynamic value and started blurry).
- Safer start: if a new version fails to start, the mod rolls back by itself.
- Many smaller fixes: falling, cover moves, D-pad, tracking loss, Vive wand trackpads, grenade throw speed.
SpecOpsTheLineVR 0.9.9
Fixes from tester reports and a full audit of controls, rendering and stability. If you have 0.9.x the mod updates itself at the next game start, or download SpecOpsTheLineVR.zip below and run install.bat again. Your specopsvr.ini is kept.
Stuck at the billboard sniper (chapter 1)?
- When the game says RB it means the right grip. Hold the right grip, put the red triangle on the sniper, release the grip and Lugo takes him out.
- Look at him or point your gun at him: both work now. The game's red triangle follows your view, and many players were aiming it with their head instead of the gun.
- The target stays locked until you release the grip, even if the gun drifts off it. Before, the order could silently fail.
Helicopter minigun
- Only one crosshair. The game's own crosshair stayed in the middle of your view next to the green marker of the gun.
- Turning your head on a mounted gun no longer turns Walker, and the view is level again when you get off.
Controls
- Melee and executions no longer lost: quick B/Y presses (and the punch gesture) were sometimes swallowed.
- Executions: press B next to a downed enemy and Walker turns to him (
execassist). - Left-handed mode: pause / objectives from the left-hand menu button.
- No more stray pause after closing the SteamVR dashboard, and no stick/turn input behind the pause menu.
- D-pad (right stick held + direction) no longer turns you; Vive trackpad and WMR bindings fixed.
- Physical reload: no firing with the magazine out (
honestreload offto allow it), no duck-to-cover while reloading. - Grenade and punch gestures are separate and never fire with your left hand on the gun.
- Cover: popping out works after entering cover standing up.
- New:
movedir hand(left stick moves where the left controller points). Seated play uses the game's crouch view.
Rendering
- Sniper scope: the circle is aligned in both eyes (it was hard to fuse) and the eye images no longer swap while scoped.
- No aim marker over videos; blood and flash effects cover the whole view with dynamic resolution.
- Less memory used by the image copy (fewer out-of-memory risks in this 32-bit game).
Stability
- Clean game exit (no crash when closing).
- Works again after a SteamVR restart (the cinema screen comes back) and notices when SteamVR crashes.
- The window can be minimized again after you take the headset off.
- bHaptics vest: hits now come from the direction of the shooter.
