Features

Moonfin for Roku builds on the foundation of the official Jellyfin Roku client with targeted UI and UX improvements for the living room. Seerr setup has its own page, see Seerr Setup.

Cross-server content playback

  • Unified library support so content from multiple Jellyfin servers plays seamlessly in one app.
  • Switch between servers without losing your place.
  • Improved server selection logic when the same title exists on more than one server.

Seerr integration

Moonfin is the first Roku client with native Seerr support, and it works with both Seerr and Jellyseerr servers. Setup goes through the Moonfin server plugin, see Seerr Setup.

  • Browse trending, popular, and recommended movies and shows, filtered by genre, studio, network, or keyword.
  • Request content in HD or 4K directly from your Roku, with smart season selection for shows.
  • View all your pending, approved, and available requests.
  • Seerr home rows for trending, popular, upcoming, and your recent requests.
  • Optional NSFW content filtering using Seerr and TMDB metadata.
  • Authenticate with your Jellyfin login, which saves a permanent local API key.
  • Global search includes Seerr results, with rich backdrop images for a cinematic discovery experience.

Server plugin sync

Requires the Moonfin server plugin, which is also what makes Seerr connectivity possible.

  • Bidirectional settings sync between the app and the server plugin (PushToServer and PullFromServer).
  • Settings persist across devices, so a new Roku picks up the preferences you already set.
  • Server-synced ratings and user preferences shared with every other Moonfin client.
  • Sync covers the detail and home rows styles, Since You Watched and Rewatch settings, cinema mode, autoplay, the Seerr NSFW block, the next up timeout, and colors.
  • Hidden Continue Watching and Next Up items sync from the server and stay hidden on Roku.
  • A server-pushed home row order from the plugin is respected on the home screen.

Theming

  • Built-in Moonfin, Neon Pulse, and 8-Bit Hero themes with bundled fonts.
  • A community Theme Store, fetched from the Moonfin-Client/Themes GitHub repo.
  • Server-shared themes through the Moonbase plugin, so a whole server can use the same look.
  • Your theme choice syncs across devices.

Home screen rows

  • A modern rows style, now the default, where the focused item grows into a landscape card with the title, metadata, ratings, and overview. The classic style is still selectable.
  • Seerr rows for trending, popular, upcoming, and recent requests.
  • 6 IMDb chart rows and 13 TMDB chart rows.
  • Custom Letterboxd and MDBList list rows through the server plugin.
  • Radarr and Sonarr upcoming calendar rows.
  • Favorites, Collections, Genres, Playlists, and Audio rows.
  • Since You Watched rows, 1 to 5 of them, using a local recommender or online suggestions through Seerr or TMDB.
  • Rewatch and per-library Recently Released rows.
  • Every row is orderable in Home Sections, and the order syncs with the plugin.

Customizable navigation bar

  • Show or hide the Shuffle, Genres, and Favorites buttons.
  • Show or hide the entire library button row for a cleaner home screen.
  • Choose whether Shuffle pulls from movies only, TV shows only, or both.
  • Pill-shaped design with a subtle rounded background and better contrast.
  • Dynamic library buttons that scroll horizontally once you have five or more libraries.
  • Smooth animations and dynamic scaling across Roku TV and Roku Stick devices.

Enhanced navigation

  • A left sidebar with expandable icons and text.
  • Quick-access Home and Search buttons.
  • A shuffle dialog with library, genre, and full-random shuffle that shows five random picks.
  • A genres menu for browsing by category.
  • Dynamic library buttons that populate automatically from your Jellyfin libraries.
  • One-click navigation to any library or collection directly from the sidebar.
  • Cleaner icon-based design for the actions you use most.

Featured media bar

  • A rotating showcase of featured movies and shows right on your home screen.
  • Five styles, Moonfin (the default), MakD, Banner, Gallery, and Bookshelf, plus Off, and switching between them applies instantly through the Media Bar Mode picker.
  • Profile-aware refresh that reloads content when you switch profiles, so nothing inappropriate lingers on a child profile.
  • Ratings, genres, runtime, and a quick overview without extra clicks.
  • Smooth crossfade transitions as items change, with matching backdrop images.
  • Filter featured content to movies only, TV shows only, or both.
  • Sized for comfortable on-TV readability.

Playback and media control

  • Pre-playback track selection so you can pick audio and subtitle tracks before playback starts.
  • Default audio and subtitle languages, with about 188 languages to choose from, synced both ways with your Jellyfin server.
  • Multi-speed scrubbing where fast forward and rewind cycle through 3x, 15x, and 50x in both directions with a scrub overlay.
  • HDR10+ support for HEVC and VP9 video.
  • Dolby Vision with SDR and HDR fallback range types.
  • Manual subtitle synchronization to adjust subtitle timing offset during playback.
  • Automatic playback retry on buffering or playback failure.
  • Live TV retry with remux when direct play fails.
  • Theme music playback in the background for shows and movies.
  • OTA updates that check for new Moonfin versions and notify you in the app.
  • An updated OSD and player styling: a modernized icon set, improved spacing and alignment, and clearer layering and opacity for readability.

Library customization

  • Library image orientation, choosing between landscape, portrait, and square grid views.

Improved details screen

  • A modern detail screen, now the default, with a tabbed layout: Episodes, Suggested, Studios with TMDB logos through the plugin, Chapters, Details, and Albums and Tracks for music.
  • An Up Next card and pill-style buttons on the modern layout.
  • The classic layout is still selectable, and a Details Background Opacity setting controls the backdrop.
  • A cleaner metadata layout covering genres, directors, writers, studios, and runtime.
  • Circular cast photos for improved readability.
  • More information on screen without the clutter.
  • Redesigned TV season details with expanded episode views, series name subtitles, and play, shuffle, and resume buttons.
  • A refreshed TV series screen with a grid-based season layout and dynamic resume buttons.
  • Unified detail screens so movies, series, seasons, and playlists share one architecture.
  • A TV guide that shows channel logos alongside titles.

UI polish

  • Overlay opacity control for the media bar, navigation bar, and sidebar.
  • Overlay color customization for the overlay background.
  • Item details appear inline within rows.
  • Focused and unfocused buttons blend better with the surrounding UI.
  • Higher contrast for improved visibility.
  • Responsive transitions and animations.
  • Consistent icons and visual styling across the app.

Other improvements

  • A tabbed sign-in screen with inline Quick Connect, which is the default when the server supports it.
  • TMDB episode ratings, with rating icons that follow the sources chosen in the plugin.
  • Much faster search, since posters load after the results render.
  • A reorganized settings menu styled to match the core app, with icons, toggles, nested playback submenus, and a Details Screen section.
  • Jellyfin 12 compatibility.
