1. What is Bezel Manager?

Bezel Manager is a graphical (GUI) tool for Windows, that allows you to easily create, edit, organize, and apply your own bezels (decorative borders) to the menu of MPV‑SW‑Capture.

With this tool you can:

  • Define your own custom bezels (PNG images with exact coordinates) without having to manually edit the menu.conf file.
  • Organize bezels by groups (NES, SNES, GB, GBA, N64, etc.) or in a custom section.
  • Enable or disable bezels individually or in bulk.
  • Automatically copy PNG images to the bezels folder in the root of the project.
  • Apply the changes directly to menu.conf, preserving the original format and structure.
  • Import and export bezel configurations from/to JSON files for sharing or backup.

2. Where to find the program

  1. Open the folder tools.
  2. Open the file MSC_Bezel_Manager.vbs.

3. Main interface

When you open the program, you will see a window with the following layout:

Bezel Manager Main Interface

3.1. Header

  • EN / ES buttons to switch the interface language between English and Spanish.

3.2. Paths panel (information)

Displays the paths the script is using:

  • Root folder: project root.
  • Tools folder: tools/ folder (where the JSON and log are stored).
  • Root bezels folder: bezels/ folder where PNG images are stored.
  • menu.conf: path to the menu.conf file that will be modified.
  • user-bezels.json: file where your custom bezels are stored (in tools/).

3.3. Saved bezels list

Shows all the bezels you have defined, with their status ([enabled] or [disabled]), their identifier (BID) and the name.

  • You can select one or more items (using Ctrl+click or Shift+click).
  • When you select one, its data is loaded into the editor for modification.

3.4. Bezel editor

Here you define or edit a bezel:

  • Display name: the visible name that will appear in the menu.
  • PNG file: path to the PNG file (you can browse for it with the Browse PNG... button).
  • Copy PNG to root bezels folder: if checked, when saving the bezel the image will be automatically copied to the bezels/ folder (recommended to keep everything organized).
  • Enable Bezel: activates or deactivates the bezel (without deleting it).
  • Group: select the group it belongs to (NES, SNES, GB, GBA, N64 or Custom).
  • Preset coords: when choosing a predefined group, the recommended X, Y, Width and Height coordinates are loaded automatically. You can also choose "Custom / Manual" to enter your own values.
  • X, Y, Width, Height: exact coordinates of the area of the image that will be displayed as a bezel.

3.5. Action buttons

In the "Saved Bezels" panel:

  • Reload list: reloads the list from the JSON file (useful if you have manually modified the JSON).
  • Import other user-bezels.json: allows you to import bezels from another JSON file (imported bezels are disabled by default).
  • Enable selected: activates the selected bezels.
  • Disable selected: deactivates the selected bezels.
  • Check PNGs: checks if all referenced PNG files exist in the bezels/ folder.
  • Delete selected: deletes the selected bezels (asks for confirmation).

In the "Bezel editor" panel:

  • Add new: saves a new bezel with the current data.
  • Update selected: updates the selected bezel with the current data.
  • Delete selected: deletes the selected bezel (asks for confirmation).
  • Clear form: clears all editor fields.
  • Delete Bezels in menu.conf: removes all BID bezels and the PERSONAL block from menu.conf (resets the Bezels section to its base state).
  • Apply to menu.conf: applies the changes of the enabled bezels to menu.conf.

3.6. Status bar

Displays informative messages about the action performed (success, error, warning, etc.) and the current status.

4. Typical workflow

Create a new bezel

  1. Open Bezel Manager.
  2. In the editor, enter the name you want (e.g., "My NES bezel").
  3. Click Browse PNG... and select the PNG image you want to use as a bezel.
  4. (Optional) Make sure the Copy PNG to root bezels folder checkbox is checked.
  5. Select the group (e.g., "NES (Famicom)").
  6. Choose the preset coordinates (e.g., "Group preset") to automatically fill in X, Y, Width and Height.
  7. (Optional) Adjust the coordinates manually if needed.
  8. Click Add new.
  9. Verify that the new bezel appears in the list with the [enabled] status.

Edit an existing bezel

  1. Click on the bezel you want to modify in the list on the left.
  2. Its data will be loaded into the editor.
  3. Make the changes you want (name, PNG, coordinates, group, etc.).
  4. Click Update selected.

Enable / disable multiple bezels

  1. Select several items from the list (hold down Ctrl or Shift).
  2. Click Enable selected or Disable selected as needed.

Apply changes to the menu

  1. Once you have all the bezels you want, make sure they are enabled (or disabled as you prefer).
  2. Click Apply to menu.conf.
  3. The program will update the menu.conf file with the lines corresponding to each enabled bezel, respecting the original structure.
  4. Restart MPV (or reload the menu) to see the changes.

Remove all bezels from the menu (reset)

  • If you want to completely clean the bezels section from menu.conf, click Delete Bezels in menu.conf.
  • This will remove all BID bezels and the PERSONAL block, leaving only the base bezels of the project.

5. Generated files

The script creates and manages the following files in the tools/ folder:

  • user-bezels.json: main data file. Contains all your defined bezels, with their properties (name, PNG, coordinates, group, status, BID). You should not edit this manually unless you know what you are doing.

6. Tips and best practices

  • Descriptive names: use clear names to easily identify each bezel in the menu.
  • PNG images: make sure to use images with transparency and in the appropriate size so they look good.
  • Always copy the PNG: check the copy option to centralize all images in the bezels/ folder and avoid broken paths.
  • Make backups: periodically save a copy of the user-bezels.json file in a safe place.
  • Test your changes: after applying to menu.conf, open MPV and verify that the bezels are displayed correctly.

7. Troubleshooting common issues

Problem Possible solution
Path errors Verify that the folder structure is correct (the script expects data/script/ and that the root contains menu.conf and bezels/).
PNGs not showing Check that the images are in the bezels/ folder and that the names match. Use the Check PNGs button to diagnose.
Menu does not show changes Make sure you clicked Apply to menu.conf and that MPV is closed or reloaded.
The "Apply" button gives an error Check that there are no duplicate lines or conflicts in menu.conf. Try restoring with Delete Bezels in menu.conf and then apply again.
