Enchanting and Anvils

The enchanting and anvil systems have been completely reworked to remove frustrations while retaining a sense of progression.

Enchanting Table

Enchanting Equipment

The enchanting table has been reworked so that enchantments are applied individually.

Note

Bookshelves no longer have an effect on an enchanting table.

Upon first opening the enchanting table and inserting an enchantable item into the leftmost slot, a list of enchantments will appear to the right as enchanted books. Common enchantments (yellow title) will be immediately available to apply at level 1. Rare enchantments (light blue title) start locked, while Epic enchantments (purple title) cannot be applied via an enchanting table.

To unlock Rare enchantments as well as higher enchantment levels, e XP must be earned. This is specific to each enchantment and player and is obtained by removing Common and Rare enchantments on a grindstone. Note that enchantment XP is not awarded for Epic enchantments.

  • The amount of XP earned is equal to the level of the enchantment.
  • For Common enchantments, 2 XP is required to unlock level 2, and the threshold doubles for each additional level for a maximum of 16 XP to unlock level 5.
  • For Rare enchantments, 2 XP is required to unlock the enchantment. 4 XP is required to unlock level 2, and the threshold doubles for each additional level for a maximum of 16 XP to unlock level 4.

The cost to apply an enchantment is:

  • enchantment_level lapis lazuli
  • enchantment_level player XP levels
  • enchantment_level * 8 player XP level requirement

If a lower level of an enchantment is desired, it can still be applied by cycling the enchantment level.

Common and Rare enchantments can also be removed individually on the enchanting table, but doing so does not award enchantment XP or refund any experience.

Enchanting Books

Enchanting books works differently to other items. Instead of selecting enchantments, five levels of experiments are available. The cost of these experiments matches the cost of adding an enchantment of the same level. Experiments add random enchantments to the book, including enchantments not yet unlocked. This is a good way to earn enchantment XP and unlock new Rare enchantments.

Here are the probabilities for experiments:

  • Number of enchantments:

    • Level 1: 1 (100%)
    • Level 2: 1 (75%), 2 (25%)
    • Level 3: 1 (60%), 2 (35%), 3 (5%)
    • Level 4: 1 (50%), 2 (40%), 3 (10%)
    • Level 5: 1 (30%), 2 (50%), 3 (15%), 4 (5%)
  • Enchantment Rarity (rolled for each enchantment):

    • Level 1: Common (95%), Rare (5%)
    • Level 2: Common (80%), Rare (20%)
    • Level 3: Common (65%), Rare (35%)
    • Level 4: Common (50%), Rare (50%)
    • Level 5: Common (40%), Rare (60%)

Each enchantment from the selected rarity is equally likely to be chosen.

  • Enchantment Level (rolled for each enchantment):
    • A random value between these numbers is chosen, multiplied by the enchantment's maximum level, then rounded up.
    • Level 1: 0 - 0.4
    • Level 2: 0.15 - 0.55
    • Level 3: 0.3 - 0.7
    • Level 4: 0.45 - 0.85
    • Level 5: 0.6 - 1.0

Anvil Mechanics

Upgrading Equipment

Anvils now allow upgrading equipment by sacrificing a piece of equipment of the next tier. This is useful for transferring enchantments or customizations onto a stronger item.

  • All enchantments and customizations on the sacrificed item are lost.
  • The damage (durability lost) on both items is combined. The equipment cannot be upgraded if this would bring the durability below one.
  • Wooden tools can be upgraded to Stone.
  • Stone tools can be upgraded to Copper.
  • Copper equipment and Chainmail armor can be upgraded to Iron.
  • Iron equipment can be upgraded to Gold, Turtle Shell, or Diamond.
  • Diamond equipment cannot be upgraded this way, as it uses the smithing table instead.

Renaming Items

Renaming items is now done in a separate menu. In addition to a new name, custom formatting options are available. 16 colors are available, in addition to the Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, and Obfuscate options. While only one color may be selected, any combination of the other options may be selected.

Once the desired formatting options are selected, clicking the name tag in the menu will open the renaming screen, where the new item name should be entered. Once the item to the right is clicked, the item will be renamed with its custom formatting.

Renaming items still costs 1 XP level, but will not damage the anvil.

Combining Items

The cost for combining items has been reworked:

  • Repairing items with materials: 1 level per material used
  • Combining items: 2 levels if the input item is repaired plus:
    • 1 level per level of Common enchantment added to the input item
    • 2 levels per level of Rare enchantment added to the input item
    • 3 levels per level of Epic enchantment added to the input item
    • If the existing enchantment on the input item is upgraded, the difference between the levels is used instead. For instance, combining Sharpness I and Sharpness III costs 2 levels.

There is no longer a work penalty applied to items, and an operation can never become "Too Expensive."

Tip

The most efficient way to apply enchanted books to equipment is now to add them one at a time to minimize the number of times enchantments are added to a new item.
