Release list
1.4.0
- Walkthroughs: ask Claude to explain a sheet ("walk me through this model") and it plays the explanation on the sheet itself, in the live preview. While Claude reads, a progress bar and the points as Claude writes them; then Claude's cursor goes to each range, outlines it, types a short note beside it, and waits for you to click Next (or press →). Back and jumping to any point are there too. Ask a question about the point in the walkthrough's own box: it goes to the chat, and Claude's answer appears in the walkthrough under your question. When the answer is about cells, Claude shows them: one range is outlined, several play as steps (3a, 3b…) right after the point, then the walkthrough carries on. Claude also uses walkthroughs for reviews and meeting prep, pointing at the cells behind each question instead of naming them in text. Everything is drawn in the preview only: nothing is written to the sheet, so collaborators see nothing.
- Fixed: in the live preview, text in a frozen row (a sheet's title, say) was cut off where it should spill into the empty cells beside it.
- The live preview changed in this release: after updating, quit and reopen Claude Desktop so it loads.
1.3.9
1.3.8
- When previews of different spreadsheets are watched at the same time (several Claude Desktop sessions sharing one Sheets MCP process), no preview follows steps in other spreadsheets, and work in a spreadsheet without a preview is no longer taken as watched by another session's preview. Hosts send no session id with a tool call, so this is the guard for the case the 1.3.6 fix left open.
1.3.7
- Fixed: in Safari, the Claude Desktop download was saved as
sheets-mcp.mcpb.htmland wouldn't open. The site now serves the file with its proper type, and the file name carries the version (sheets-mcp-1.3.7.mcpb). - The site shows which version you're downloading, and this changelog.
- Same server as 1.3.6. If you installed 1.3.6 before October 9, update to get the preview fixes below: an earlier build shipped under that version number.
1.3.6
- Fixed: the live preview could jump to a spreadsheet from another Claude session. In Claude Desktop one Sheets MCP process serves every open session, and a preview followed any session's reads. It now stays with its own task.
- The preview stays open through Claude's pauses between steps: it folds after a minute of quiet, not 12 seconds.
- A read of several ranges outlines the whole block while it runs.
- The preview tells Claude when it has scrolled out of your sight, so Claude opens a fresh one where you're looking. Long tabs load more rows as you scroll down.
- When your computer is idle (you're on your phone or claude.ai), Claude skips the live view and summarizes its work as text with a link to the sheet.
- Smaller preview results: each cell format is sent once instead of per cell.
Sheets MCP 1.3.5
Recently worked on
Every spreadsheet you've used with Sheets MCP, in a searchable list right in the chat.
- Opens when you need it. Start talking about your sheets ("let's work on my budget") without a link, or name one that matches several, and Claude shows the list. Or ask "show my recent sheets".
- Search, filter by Google account, pin the ones you use most, and open any of them in Google Sheets.
- Tick several and send them to Claude with what you want done, even sheets from different Google accounts.
- New command: "Recently worked on". In Claude Code, type
/mcp__google-sheets__recent_sheets; Claude lists your sheets and asks which to use.
The list lives on your computer (~/.sheets-mcp/recent.json), like before.
Updating
- Claude Desktop: download sheets-mcp.mcpb, open it, and click Install. Then quit Claude Desktop (Cmd+Q) and reopen it so the new list shows up.
- Claude Code:
@sheetsmcp/server1.3.5 is on npm.
Sheets MCP 1.3.4
Free, local, open source
Claude now has its own Google Sheets integration on paid plans. Sheets MCP is the free, open-source option that runs on your computer, for Claude Desktop and Claude Code:
- Free: works on the free Claude plan in Claude Desktop.
- Local: your computer talks straight to Google, with access to spreadsheets only. No other servers.
- Open source (MIT): read it, change it, run your own.
The README and sheetsmcp.io now include a side-by-side comparison with the built-in integration, so you can pick the one that suits you.
Smaller changes
- Tool names: every tool has a readable title (e.g. "Write cells", "Add a pivot table") in Claude's tool approvals and settings.
- Version: the server reports its real version to Claude instead of 1.0.0.
Updating
- Claude Desktop: download sheets-mcp.mcpb, open it, and click Install. Then quit Claude Desktop (Cmd+Q) and reopen it.

Sheets MCP 1.3.3
The live preview follows Claude into the sheets it reads
When you ask Claude to build a sheet from other sheets, for example "copy these tabs into a new sheet", it usually spends a while reading the sources before it writes anything. The preview used to sit on the new, empty sheet during all of that. Now:
- While Claude is reading, the preview shows the sheet it's reading, with the same scanning outline you see on your own sheet.
- Once Claude starts writing to the sheet you asked about, the preview stays there. Later reads from the sources show up in the steps list, so the preview doesn't jump back and forth.
- A row of spreadsheets replaces the title when Claude has worked in more than one. An orange dot marks the one Claude is in. Click any of them to look at it, the same way the tab strip works.
- The steps list names the spreadsheet for steps in another sheet, e.g.
read_range Compass Model V1 › Inputs!A1:D7.
Smaller fixes
- No more snap-back: Claude's outline no longer jumps back to its last change and then out again between steps. An outline that was hidden now appears where it belongs instead of growing out of the corner.
- "Reading" label: the Live label says "Reading" while Claude reads, instead of "Editing".
- No duplicate previews: Claude no longer opens a second preview for a source sheet when the one you're watching already follows it there.
Updating
- Claude Desktop: download sheets-mcp.mcpb, open it, and click Install. Then quit Claude Desktop (Cmd+Q) and reopen it. Until you do, chats keep showing the old preview.
- Claude Code:
@sheetsmcp/server1.3.3 is on npm.
