Wearing, opening and placing

  • Wear a backpack in the chest slot, or in the Curios back slot when Curios is installed.
  • Open the worn backpack anywhere with B.
  • Place it as a block. Placed backpacks keep working, including on Create contraptions.
  • Keep on death: a backpack in the Curios back slot stays equipped on death by default (the keepBackpackOnDeath server option). One in the main inventory drops as normal.
  • Ammo and Toolboxes: ranged weapons can draw ammo from the worn backpack, and Create Toolboxes can take items from it. Both are client settings, on by default.
  • Recipe viewers: JEI, EMI and REI can fill crafting grids with ingredients from the backpack.

Backpack models and textures can be fully replaced with a resource pack. See Backpack Models.

Compartments

Compartment Slots Notes
Item storage 108 The main inventory. Hoppers, chutes and funnels can insert into and extract from this compartment only
Tool storage 24 Secure, automation can't reach it. Tools, weapons, Elytras and backtanks shift-click here
Upgrades 6 Hold backpack upgrades. Ctrl + right-click an upgrade to turn it on or off. Upgrades with settings open a side panel

Upgrades

All upgrades are crafted from the Upgrade Template and work while the backpack is worn. The Magnet, Void, Jukebox and Portable Workshop upgrades also work from a placed backpack.

Upgrade What it does
Magnet Pulls nearby items into the item storage. 5 blocks by default (backpackMagnetRange). A filter chooses which items
Item Pickup Items you pick up go straight into the item storage instead of your inventory
Pick Block Pick Block takes the block from your backpack when it isn't in your hotbar
Refill Refills the selected hotbar stack from the item storage as you use it. Items can be excluded with the refill_blacklist tag
Tool Swap Switches to the best tool or weapon from the tool storage when you mine or attack
Feeder Eats food from the backpack when you're hungry or your health is low (thresholds). A filter chooses which foods
Thirst Drinks from the backpack when you're thirsty. Requires Thirst Was Reclaimed
Jetpack Flight and hovering, powered by Create backtanks, even underwater. See Jetpack
Fall Damage Prevents fall damage while worn
Ore Mining Mines a whole connected vein at once. An outline previews the vein. Hold ` to vein-mine any block, not just ores
Torch Deployer Places torches from the backpack when the light level drops (light level and source)
Jukebox Plays music discs from the backpack, with buffs. See Jukebox buffs
Mechanical Heart Grants extra hearts. 5 by default (healthUpgradeBonus)
Crafting A full crafting grid inside the backpack, using ingredients from the backpack or your inventory
Portable Workshop A built-in Deployer and Mechanical Press for deploying, pressing and polishing recipes on the go. Powered by a backtank
Void Deletes items that match its filter as they arrive in the item storage

Modpacks can disable any upgrade with the disabled_backpack_upgrades tag.

Jetpack

  • Fuel: pressurized air from Create backtanks, worn or stored in the backpack. A gauge shows the remaining flight time.
  • Flying: hold Jump to fly up to 32 blocks above the ground.
  • Hovering: press H, or Jump + Sneak while flying, to hold your height.
  • Alternate hover mode: with the jetpackHoverMode client setting set to ALTERNATE, the Jetpack works like creative flight. Double-tap Jump to start or stop flying, and hold Jump or Sneak to rise or descend.
  • Press G to switch the Jetpack on or off without opening the backpack.

Jetpack Modifiers

Place one modifier in the modifier slot of the Jetpack panel to trade off height, speed and fuel:

Item Name Effect
jetpack_modifier_propeller.png Propeller Raises the height limit from 32 blocks to 64 blocks
jetpack_modifier_encased_fan.png Encased Fan Removes the height limit, but uses 10% more fuel for every 16 blocks above 64
jetpack_modifier_blaze_burner.png Blaze Burner Afterburner: flies 50% faster with fire exhaust and uses 75% more fuel, setting nearby mobs alight
jetpack_modifier_netherite_backtank.png Netherite Backtank Increases the capacity of all backtanks in the backpack by 50%
jetpack_modifier_fluid_valve.png Fluid Valve Uses 30% less fuel, but flies 10% slower
jetpack_modifier_firework_rocket.png Firework Rocket Elytra Boost: hold Jump while gliding with an Elytra to fly 50% faster, using 200% more fuel

Servers can turn modifiers off with the jetpackModifiersEnabled server option. The slot is then shaded red, and fitted modifiers stop working but can still be removed.
