Tags in OCI

Tagging in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) means adding extra information (metadata) to resources like instances, databases, storage, and VCNs. It helps us organize, identify, and track resources easily.

  • Tag Namespace: A container that groups tags and helps avoid naming conflicts, control access, and maintain standards.
  • Tag Key: The name of the category, such as Project or Environment.
  • Tag Value: The actual value assigned to the key, such as Payroll, Dev, or Prod. Example: HR.Project = Payroll

Tags help us manage cloud resources and track costs according to our business needs.

Types of Tags in OCI

  • Free-form Tags: Simple key-value pairs created directly by users. Useful for temporary notes and basic resource labeling.
  • Defined Tags: Predefined key-value pairs created within a tag namespace. Useful for cost tracking, security, and resource management.
