Keeps actions taking the same amount of wall-clock time when your server drops below 20 TPS.
When a server lags, time-based things stretch. A potion that should take 30 seconds takes 45. A bow takes longer to charge. Breeding takes longer. Mob growth stalls. Fluids crawl. The day drags.
Tick Smoothing measures your actual tick rate and rescales those durations against it, so they stay close to what they would be at 20 TPS.

Tick Smoothing is not an optimisation mod. It does not make your server faster.
It hides the symptoms of low TPS. Nothing in here reduces load — a server at 12 TPS will still be at 12 TPS. What changes is that the world stops behaving as if it were running slower than it is.
Use it alongside real performance work, never instead of it. If you are using it as a substitute for profiling, it will make a laggy server feel fine while getting steadily worse.

Every server tick, the mod reads the server's own average tick time, keeps a short rolling average of it, and derives a compensation factor:
factor = tps / 20
Clamped, and never above 1. The factor can only ever slow compensation down, never speed anything up — a fast server is left completely alone.
Each feature module then either shortens the number of ticks an action needs, or runs a few extra catch-up iterations, driven by that factor.
The factor is server-authoritative and synced to clients, so client-side animation and prediction — item use, bow charge, crossbow charge — stays in step and does not rubber-band. That last part is the detail that separates this from a naive implementation.
Eleven modules across two groups, plus safety features. Full list on What It Compensates.
- Player actions — block breaking, eating and drinking, bow and crossbow charge, item pickup.
- World and entities — potion effects, mob timers, fluid spread, random ticks, day/night cycle, portals, sleeping.
Two more are off by default for good reasons: TNT and block entities.
- Getting Started — install, and check whether it is helping.
- What It Compensates — all eleven modules.
- Safety — watchdog, rubber-banding, and why TNT is off.
- Configuration — every option with its default and range.
- Compatibility — server and client behaviour.
