Compatibility

Applies to Tick Smoothing 1.0.0 for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge).

Loaders

Loader Supported
NeoForge Yes — 21.1.249
Fabric No
Forge No

Java 21.

Dependencies

None.

Server and client

Install on the server and on clients.

Side Role
Server Measures TPS, computes the factor, runs the compensation. Authoritative.
Client Receives the factor and applies it to local animation and prediction.

Clients do not compute the factor themselves. It is measured on the server and synced, which is what stops a lagging client from desyncing its own view of the world — no rubber-banding on item use, bow charge or crossbow charge.

A client without the mod still works; it simply does not smooth its own prediction. Nothing breaks.

What it does not fix

Tick Smoothing does not raise TPS. It rescales durations so the world does not behave as if it were running slowly. A server at 12 TPS is still at 12 TPS after installing it.

It does not reduce load, and it is not a substitute for profiling. If you have not found what is consuming your tick budget, do that first. See Getting Started.

Mods that manage their own timers

The risk with a mod like this is a mod that already compensates for lag. Two systems scaling the same timer can fight each other.

If you notice a timer that is now slightly wrong in one direction, look for a mod that adjusts it and turn one of them off. Every module is individually toggleable, so you can resolve it without removing Tick Smoothing. See What It Compensates.

Opt-in and experimental

Two modules are off by default because they carry real risk rather than because they are untested:

  • tnt — accelerating explosion timing punishes the players least able to react.
  • blockEntities — marked experimental, and expensive. If you enable it, narrow the blockEntityMask from *:*.

See Safety.

Performance cost

Negligible: a tick-time read and a short rolling average per server tick, plus a payload sync to clients. The expensive part is blockEntities, which is off for that reason.

Content added

None. No blocks, items, recipes or world data. Uninstalling leaves saves untouched.

Verifying it is running

/ticksmoothing status

Reports live TPS, the live factor, and which modules are active. A factor of 1.0 means no compensation is happening — either the server is healthy, or the rolling window has not filled yet. See Configuration.
