Sources
Foldman has three "tapes": your own music files, Apple Music and YT Music. Load one from the Sources list on the unfolded screen, or from the tape shelf (the orange button) on the cover screen. One tape is in the deck at a time, so loading another pauses the one that was playing.
Plays music files stored on the phone.
- Choose Local folder → Choose folder (on the cover screen: Choose music folder).
- Pick a folder in the system picker. Foldman can read only that folder and its sub-folders.
- Formats: MP3, M4A/AAC, FLAC, OGG/Opus, WAV, AIFF, MKA and anything else Android can play.
- Albums: each sub-folder is listed as an album, in natural order ("2" before "10").
- Titles: read from the files' tags, or taken from file names ("03 - Blue Monday.flac" becomes Blue Monday). Tags are read for the first 600 files.
-
Album art: taken from the file's embedded art, or from an image named
cover,folder,frontoralbum(.jpgor.png) in the same folder. - Playback continues in the background, with a media notification, lock-screen controls and headphone buttons.
- Winding: REW and FF wind straight through into the previous or next song, like one long tape.
Foldman can play Apple Music in two ways. Which one you get depends on how the APK was built.
Release APKs from the releases page include Apple's MusicKit SDK, so they work this way.
- Install the Apple Music app and sign in with an Apple ID that has a subscription.
- In Foldman choose Apple Music → Sign in to Apple Music, then approve the request. Apple's screen opens through the Apple Music app.
- Your library playlists appear. Open one, then press PLAY or tap a song to start from it.
- Foldman streams the songs itself, so the art, queue, keys, REW/FF and counter all act on its own tape. Playlists play in order.
- Apple's player runs in a separate process. If it ever crashes, the music picks up again on the same song a few seconds later, and Foldman stays open.
- Songs you uploaded to Apple Music yourself can't be streamed this way; they're greyed out.
- Sign out is on the playlists screen.
Builds made without MusicKit work this way, as does YT Music. Foldman becomes a remote control for the Apple Music app. See the next section.
Foldman drives the streaming app through its media session, the same interface your lock screen and Bluetooth headphones use.
- Choose YT Music → Grant access (Grant notification access on the cover screen), and turn Foldman on in the list Android shows. Android only shares media sessions with apps that have notification access. Foldman doesn't read your notifications.
- Start something in the YT Music app, or press PLAY in Foldman to resume your last queue.
- The keys, AMS, artwork on the label and (when the app shares it) the queue all work.
- You choose albums and playlists inside the streaming app itself.
- REW/FF wind within the current song: rewinding stops at its start, and fast-forwarding past its end skips to the next song and stops.
- The VU needles animate rather than following the audio.
