First-Day Survival

Get water, shelter, and a way back before you start looting the city.

Before the first night

Sort this out Why
Water You cannot drink straight from a source. Fill a canteen and find a purifier.
Temperature Check the survival HUD before a long trip. Shelter and climate gear prevent exposure.
Waystones Use a Waystone once before expecting it to work as a destination.
Shelter A complete tarp or supported tent protects you and can become a campsite.
Radio A calibrated Radio Transmitter gives you contracts, weather, and horde information.

Water and temperature

Keep an empty canteen. A Water Purifier uses sand to turn untreated bottles and canteens into safe water. When thirst is empty, you cannot sprint or heal naturally.

Temperature works alongside thirst. A thermometer and temperature gauge help you read it; a thermoregulator is useful for a permanent base. Respawning does not grant climate protection.

Infection

Zombie hits can infect you, and the infection advances through stages.

  • An Antiviral Suppressant delays the current stage and gives brief immunity.
  • A Complete Infection Cure removes an active infection.
  • Dr. Mara Voss offers both through the Survivor Network.

Suppressants buy time, but they are not a cure.

Sleep and shelter

A Traveler's Backpack sleeping bag skips an ordinary night, but an unprepared camp causes Restless Sleep. For 50 seconds, it removes one hunger icon and one thirst icon every ten seconds.

To avoid Restless Sleep, use a complete campsite:

  • a Rotwire tarp or supported SimplyTents shelter;
  • a sleeping bag inside the shelter;
  • a lit campfire or soul campfire within the campsite radius; and
  • at least one inventory-capable block nearby, with more than 5 total nutrition across its food containers.

Food is consumed only when the night actually advances. A valid camp gives you Prepared Shelter, and a Camp Radio shows which requirement is missing.

Stay awake from dusk through a full natural night to get New Dawn, which restores hunger and thirst over 50 seconds. Sleeping, dying, changing dimensions, joining late, or another player skipping the night cancels it.

Travel

Waystones must be activated before use. Same-dimension travel costs experience based on distance. Warp Stones have a short charge and cost one experience level per 100 blocks by default. Warp Plates are free destinations.

Next: set up a Camp Radio or learn the weapons and travel items.
