First Day Survival
Your first goal is not to conquer a city. It is to make it to tomorrow with water, cover, and a route back.
| Priority | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Carry water | Drinking by hand is disabled. Fill a canteen; untreated water is a short-term risk, not a routine solution. |
| Watch temperature | Check the survival HUD before long trips. Shelter, clothing, and climate equipment solve exposure before it becomes an emergency. |
| Claim a route | Interact with a Waystone before relying on it as a destination. |
| Find cover | A tarp or supported tent protects you from the elements and is the foundation of a camp. |
| Make a radio | A calibrated Radio Transmitter provides contracts, horde information, and weather forecasts. |
Keep an empty canteen even after you establish a base. A Water Purifier turns untreated bottles and canteens into reliable drinking water when supplied with sand. When thirst is empty, sprinting and natural healing stop, so refill before leaving shelter.
Temperature is enabled alongside thirst. A thermometer and temperature gauge help you read the situation; a thermoregulator belongs in any long-term base. Do not treat respawning as climate protection.
Zombie hits can infect you. Infection progresses in stages, so act while there is still time:
- An Antiviral Suppressant delays the current stage and grants brief immunity.
- A Complete Infection Cure removes an active infection.
- Dr. Mara Voss's Survivor Network contracts are the dependable route to both treatments.
Suppressants buy time. They are not a replacement for a complete cure.
A Traveler's Backpack sleeping bag will skip an ordinary night, but sleeping without a prepared camp applies Restless Sleep. For 50 seconds afterward, it drains one full hunger icon and one full thirst icon every ten seconds.
Avoid that penalty by sleeping in a complete camp:
- a Rotwire tarp or supported SimplyTents shelter overhead;
- a lit campfire or soul campfire nearby;
- a deployed Traveler's Backpack in the shelter; and
- food in that backpack worth more than 5 nutrition.
The smallest qualifying food combination is consumed only when the night actually advances. If the camp is valid, Prepared Shelter appears; a Camp Radio can show exactly which requirement is missing.
Alternatively, remain awake from dusk through a full natural night to earn New Dawn, which restores the same amount of hunger and thirst over 50 seconds. Sleeping, dying, changing dimensions, joining late, or another player skipping the night forfeits it.
Waystones must be activated before use. Same-dimension Waystone travel costs experience by distance, while Warp Stones are much more expensive and need a short charge. Warp Plates are free destinations—use them to connect defended hubs rather than exposed shortcuts.
