Frequenly Asked Questions
Do I need a science background to play these? No. Every game teaches you what you need as you go. If a game uses a term you don't know, it explains it inline before it matters.
Is this project arguing against evolution? No — and it's not arguing for it either. Each game takes one specific piece of reasoning (how trees are built, what similarity does and doesn't prove, how many independent origins the logic actually allows for) and lets you test it directly instead of taking anyone's word for it. Where the reasoning leads is up to what you find, not a script.
Is the data in these games real, or simulated? It depends on the game:
- The Phylogenetic Tree Visualizer uses real cytochrome c sequence data from 24 real plant species — nothing simulated.
- Origin of Life Gamble and Xenobiology Classification Lab are simulations/games built around real concepts, using invented specimens or randomized trials rather than a specific published dataset.
- One, Few, or Many? and Origami Ancestry Test are interactive arguments/experiments — they're making a logical point rather than presenting a dataset.
Each game's wiki page says exactly what's real and what's illustrative.
A game isn't working on my phone. Try refreshing, and make sure you're on the latest version of your browser. If it's still broken, note which game, your device, and your browser, and reach out through the contact info on testingthetree.com.
Can I suggest a new game or a change to an existing one? Yes — reach out through the site. Ideas that attack a specific assumption in the ancestry/origin-of-life reasoning (the same way the existing five do) are the best fit for this collection.
