Inside the app it's called Life Jackpot — and it's built like a slot machine on purpose. Getting from raw chemistry to the first living cell wasn't one lucky roll. It was a chain of them. This game makes you pull that chain, one link at a time, and see how the odds stack up.
Each "spin" is one of the real milestones origin-of-life researchers actually study:
- Amino acids form from inorganic chemistry
- Nucleotides assemble from simpler molecules
- Monomers concentrate in a local environment
- Monomers polymerize into chains without enzymes
- A molecule emerges that copies itself
- Copies vary, and those differences are inherited
- A membrane forms that encloses the chemistry
- Replication and membrane division become coupled
- A code linking nucleotides to amino acids emerges
- Machinery that reads the code and builds proteins appears
Every one of these has to happen — and in roughly that order — before you get something you'd call "alive."
- Hit spin and watch each step resolve. A green pill means it hit. Red means it missed. Dashed amber means it's still pending.
- Nothing is hidden — the panel always shows you what's happening right now, so you're never just watching a black box.
- Defaults are already playable straight away; you don't have to configure anything to get started. If you want to dig deeper, the odds behind each step can be adjusted so you can test different assumptions about how likely each individual leap really is.
It's easy to say "given enough time, anything can happen." This game turns that into a number you can actually look at: run the trials, and see how often — or how rarely — all ten steps land in the same run, inside a timeframe that's supposed to be realistic. "Rare" and "impossible" are not the same word, and this is the tool for telling them apart.
- Run it more than once. A single spin tells you almost nothing — the pattern only shows up over many runs.
- Try tightening or loosening the odds on the steps you find least certain, and watch how much that single change moves the final result. Some steps matter far more than others.
