Booting Your Console

Ryan Miceli edited this page Oct 6, 2026 · 1 revision

There's 3 different ways you can boot your console once the softmod is installed: normal mode, safe mode, and retail mode. Additionally if you have "other OS" enabled you can boot your console via the eject button to launch things like xell or linux.

Normal Mode

This is the default method of booting your console, the exploit will run at startup and should boot you into a fully hacked system. Any method of powering on your console other than the two methods described below will boot your console in this mode.

Safe Mode

While the console is powered off, holding the sync button down while using any means to power on the console other than the power button (ex: eject button, controller, IR remote, etc), and continuing to hold the sync button until the dashboard is loaded. This will boot your console into safe mode, in this mode the exploit will still trigger at startup and the console will be ready to run homebrew. However, it will completely ignore your softmod settings and boot right to the MS dashboard.

This mode is intended to help recover from some change related to softmod settings that prevents your console from booting correctly, ex: changing boot animation settings, issues with your homebrew dashboard, etc. You can still launch your homebrew dashboard or access the softmod settings app through the guide to correct the issue.

Retail Mode

While the console is powered off hold down the sync button and press the power button, continue holding the sync button until the dashboard loads. This will boot your console into retail mode, in this mode the exploit does not run at all and you boot into a completely stock/unmodified OS that cannot run homebrew. This mode is intended for potential system recovery operations (or maybe XBL if it's determined to be safe).

Note

The boot animation will not play when booting into retail mode due to it being renamed as part of the exploit process.

OtherOS Mode

If you configured the OtherOS settings in the softmod settings app you can boot the console via the eject button to launch your configured other OS option.
