Supported Devices
EthiFi is written for the ESP8266 microcontroller. There are plenty of development boards available β all you need to do is choose one.
β The ESP8285 is also supported β it is essentially an ESP8266 with embedded flash memory.
β The ESP32 is NOT supported and will not work with EthiFi.

- π‘ External antenna for better range
- π 18650 battery connector for portable use
- Version with OLED screen
- Version without screen (smaller, cheaper)
- NodeMCU-based version
π‘ All DSTIKE boards can be reflashed with your own firmware just like any other ESP8266 development board.
If you want to assemble EthiFi yourself from scratch:
| π§ Component | π Notes |
|---|---|
| NodeMCU v1.0 | Recommended β see below |
| Compatible display | Optional, depends on your build |
| USB cable (data-capable) | Many cheap cables are charge-only β make sure yours carries data |
| USB driver | CP2102 or CH340 β see Driver Installation |
π’ Recommended for beginners who want to learn electronics and programming.

The NodeMCU is an open-source project produced by many different manufacturers. The most well-known is Amica. There is also a Lolin NodeMCU v3, but version names across manufacturers can be confusing.

| π§ Spec | π Detail |
|---|---|
| π° Price | ~$3β5 (AliExpress & similar) |
| π USB Chip | CP2102 (more reliable than CH340) |
| π Breadboard | β Friendly β fits standard breadboards |
| π¦ Flash Size | 4 MB |
Why NodeMCU v1.0?
- πΈ Cheap and widely available

Counterfeit boards are common β they look nearly identical to legitimate products but use inferior components and poor PCB design. Some are outright mislabeled with trusted brand names.
- β Poor PCB design and layout
- β Low-quality components that fail early
- β Misleading or stolen branding (e.g., labeled as "TTGO" or "Wemos" by unrelated sellers)
- β Unpredictable behaviour β may flash incorrectly or not at all
| β Seller | π Reason |
|---|---|
| LILY GO | Copies designs, misuses open-source branding |
| FACE-TO-FACE Electronic | Counterfeit hardware |
| Seatechnolgy | Counterfeit hardware |
