Summary

Bookstack is designed to let you add items in a variety of ways. The most basic, fastest methods use the mouse. You can drag a link to the sidebar or the toolbar button. You can middle-click a link (with ctrl/meta if that is set).

Methods for adding

  1. Drag and drop to the toolbar button or sidebar
  2. Middle-clicking a link
  3. Via link context menu (right-clicking a link)
  4. Via content area context menu (right-clicking a page)
  5. Tab context menu:
    • Add This tab to Stack will add the tab you right-clicked on
    • Add All tabs to Stack will add all tabs (excluding Firefox pages like about:addons)
  6. Other bookmarking methods: because Bookstack simply stores its data as regular bookmarks, you can migrate bookmarks in via all the usual Firefox bookmark ways, by simply having them in the same folder Bookstack uses
  7. Command-line flag: -bookstack-add <URL>
This is mostly meant to be used by external programs that you may have to add links to Bookstack. For example you might have an IRC client with a script that could use it. This option does not support titles, and instead just uses the URL of the item as the title.

Editing upon adding

Often you will add a link with a bad name like, "click here," or, "136 comments," and you want to change it. You could add it and go into the sidebar, right-click it and select "properties." But you'd rather change it straight away. If you hold the shift key while performing most link-adding actions (not drag and drop, as shift is used by the platform for other purposes there), it will open the new bookmark's properties to let you change that title as part of your workflow.

Notifications

The purpose of the notifications is simply to add visible feedback that you did, in fact, add something. Sometimes the mouse can be fidgety or you might not have the best motor skills. Instead of having to open the Sidebar to double-check, the notification will show you a little dancing icon next to the location bar.
