Read this page https://github.com/jroal/a2dpvolume/wiki/Notification-Reader-Settings to get the notification reader working. Note also that since version 2.12.11 the SMS reader was removed to comply with Play Store policy changes. Now you will need to use the notification reader to read SMS.

Note: If the app crashes this can be due to insufficient permissions. In Android 6.0 and up app permissions are very complex. If you deny this app permissions it may crash. Check your permissions in Android settings -> apps -> A2DP Volume -> permissions. Make sure all are selected.
