Ryobi BDS460: 4"x36" Belt, 5" Disk Sander

Dust Collection

As with all things in the woodshop saw dust collection is an important responsibility of the machine user. A cleaner environment results in less machine wear and better human health.

If one is going to use this machine one MUST connect a vacuum system to the machines dust port. In addition the rooms overhead air filters must be turned on.

NOTE: If the collection system does not seem to be working adequately please post a note to the woodshop discord channel.

NOTE: At present we do not have a good story for capturing "all" of the fine dust expelled by the sander. Thus we ask that you take it outside of the shop when using. Attaching the Hercules vacuum cleaner to the dust port will help redue the clean up effort.

The Machine

This is the Ryobi model BSD460 Belt/Disk Sander

This sander currently resides on the flip cart along with the planer.

Flip cart in normal postion, planer on top.

Cart with Sander on top

To flip the cart top:

  • clear the top of anything that is not attached
  • secure the power cord of the machine currently on top
  • Make sure there is nothing on the lower shelf. One machine is taller than the other.
  • If the sander is currently on top make sure the belt arm is secured by the metal chain to prevent the arm from over extending when the top is flipped.
  • pull the two locking pins located on each end of the cart.
  • Carefully help the machines filp. Do not let gravity swing the table to fast as it may damage the flip mechanism.
  • Re-insert both locking pins.
  • If the sander is now on top, disconnect the arm securing chain before operating the sander.

On the same shelf you may find any available spare sanding belts that are specific to this machine. Please be sure the belts are secured to the shelf so they are not lost when the cart is flipped. Spare sanding disks may be found within a container elsewhere within the wood shop area. The dust port's dust collection hose adapters must stay with the machine at all times.

The sander has a single dust collection port that services both the belt and disk sander operation.

This shows the machine's 2” and Hercules adapters, circled in green, connected to the dust port.
