Yometan

A vocabulary app for finishing the English books you start. Learn the words a book needs before you read it.

Leave the reading itself to Kindle or Apple Books — Yometan focuses on the preparation. It picks the important words from a book you import, tuned to your vocabulary level, lets you preview them chapter by chapter without spoilers, and helps the words you choose to learn stick through short daily reviews.

FAQ

How do I import a book?

Paste text, or import an EPUB (DRM-free) or a PDF. If a PDF is a scanned image, the text is read on-device with OCR. Importing starts extracting the important words.

A word's meaning is stuck on "Loading…"

Meanings come from Apple's on-device Translation. The first time, downloading the Japanese language pack needs an internet connection. Check your connection and tap "Retry" on the book screen. Once downloaded, meanings work offline.

What's the difference between preview and review?

  • Preview is sorting words into "known" / "to learn" (the quick triage). You choose what to learn before you read.
  • Review shows the words you marked "to learn" as daily flashcards.

Unsorted words don't appear in review. Once you mark a word "to learn" during preview, it joins your reviews from the next day.

What does "chapter-by-chapter preview" mean?

Each word is assigned to the chapter where it first appears, so you can preview only the words in the chapter you're about to read — without revealing words from later chapters (no spoilers).

What does the "X% understood" figure mean?

It's an estimate of how much of the book you can understand: words you already knew, plus words you marked "known", plus words settled through review. It rises as you learn, showing how much easier the book gets.

Can I export the words I've learned?

Yes. From the book screen you can export in Anki-compatible CSV / TSV and use them in other flashcard apps.

Where is my data stored? Can I move it to another device?

Imported books and study progress are stored only on your device (there is no iCloud sync), so they are not carried over to another device automatically. Deleting the app removes the data on the device.

About Pro / restoring purchases

Some features are unlocked with a one-time Pro purchase. After changing or reinstalling, use "Restore Purchases" in Settings to restore a purchase made with the same Apple Account.

I'm not getting notifications

  • Check Settings → Notifications → Yometan is allowed
  • Make sure the review reminder is on and check its time in the app's settings
  • If "Don't notify on days I reviewed" is on, no notification is sent that day
  • A Focus mode or notification summary can delay the scheduled time
