The decans (/หˆdษ›kษ™nz/; Egyptian b๊œฃktw or baktiu, "workers") are 36 groups of stars (small constellations) used in the ancient Egyptian astronomy to conveniently divide the 360 degree ecliptic into 36 parts of 10 degrees each, both for theurgical and helialical horological purposes. The decans each appeared, geocentrically, to rise consecutively on the horizon throughout each daily earth rotation. The rising of each decan marked the beginning of a new decanal "hour" (Greek hลra) of the night for the ancient Egyptians, and they were used as a sidereal star clock beginning by at least the 9th or 10th Dynasty (c. 2100 BCE). A new decan also appears heliacally every ten days. (Germanic week 3*10=30)

Conflicting systems within Egypt

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_calendar

The Egyptians appear to have used a purely lunar calendar prior to the establishment of the solar civil calendar[14][15] in which each month began on the morning when the waning crescent moon could no longer be seen.

The Coptic calendar is arguably the oldest calendar system that is still in widespread use. It has its roots in the ancient Egyptian calendar, whose earliest documented implementations date back to the 5th millennium BCE. However, it has undergone a number of reforms through the centuries, attaining its current form in 25 BCE.

Until the closing of Egypt's polytheist temples under the Byzantines, the lunar calendar continued to be used as the liturgical year of various cults.[15] The lunar calendar divided the month into four weeks, reflecting each quarter of the lunar phases. (versus decans!!)

civil calendar

The civil calendar was established at some early date in or before the Old Kingdom, with probable evidence of its use early in the reign of Shepseskaf (c.โ€‰2510 BC, Dynasty IV) and certain attestation during the reign of Neferirkare (mid-25th century BC, Dynasty V)

It was probably based upon astronomical observations of Sirius[13] whose reappearance in the sky closely corresponded to the average onset of the Nile flood through the 5th and 4th millennium BC.

Likely borrowed from or to the Fertile Crescent in the Jemdet Nasr Period
