Welcome to the OpenTagViewer wiki!

This wiki contains a summary of some good-to-know information when it comes to using the OpenTagViewer Android app.

Prerequisites 🤓

To use the app at this point in time, you're going to need:

  • Android phone with OpenTagViewer app installed
  • A (free) Apple Account with 2FA enabled either via SMS or Trusted Device
  • One or more AirTags, which need to already be registered with Apple via the iOS FindMy app
    • Currently this requires somebody to have an iOS device (i.e. iPad or iPhone) to register them.
    • This iOS device is only needed once during AirTag registration.
    • The owner of some iOS device can also simply share "their" AirTags with your (new) Apple Account after registering them.
  • A Mac or MacOS Virtual Machine of MacOS/OSX version Sonoma (14) or LOWER (so: not MacOS Sequoia (15)!).
    • Check out the project sickcodes/Docker-OSX which allows you to set up a MacOS Sonoma (14) VM for free on Windows or Linux
    • This Mac is only needed once to export details about the AirTags for import into the Android App

How to set everything up 🏃

  1. Install the OpenTagViewer Android app on your phone
  2. Choose an Anisette Server (you can change this later)
  3. Log in to the Apple Account with its email and password on the login page
    • You will likely be prompted to enter your 2FA code the first time you connect to the chosen Anisette server
    • Only SMS and Trusted Device authentication is currently possible
  4. Generate an export .zip file by using the MacOS Exporter Tool as explained in 📖 this wiki page
  5. Import the .zip file in the OpenTagViewer UI as explained in 📖 this wiki page
  6. Profit! You will now be able to track your AirTags on your Android phone indefinitely
