Salsa64 v0.2.6 (preview)
Preview release. Banjo-Tooie and F-Zero X become playable, frame interpolation arrives as an experimental option, and the console can no longer freeze on a stuck GPU. Salsa64 is a Nintendo 64 emulator for the PlayStation 3 (homebrew, HEN or CFW), built around the Cell.
Español abajo.
New
- Banjo-Tooie is playable: the PIF now answers the game's CIC-6105 challenge.
- F-Zero X races: cars, track, HUD and the cars' highlights (F-Zero's own F3DFLX microcode).
- Frame interpolation (experimental, off by default): games that run at 20 or 30 fps can show in-between frames rebuilt from the geometry, for smoother motion. «Interpolación: Por geometría (exp.)» in Options, per game, or live from «Imagen» in the pause menu. Best at 3× / 720p.
- ○ in the game list exits to the XMB (with a confirmation): no more scrolling to the end of a long list.
- Version shown in the menu, the pause menu and the log.
- Graphics: Conker's shadows, Pokémon Snap (depth of translucent layers, leaves), Kirby 64 (enemies were missing their bodies) and Pokémon Stadium 2 (JPEG images).
- CFW fallback (issue #2): if a console cannot run the CPU recompiler, Salsa64 falls back to the interpreter instead of hanging.
Fixed
- Console freeze in F-Zero X at 5× (course selection). And a safety net: no wait on the GPU can be endless any more. After 2 s the log says what is stuck and the PS button keeps working; after 12 s the game saves and closes on its own.
- Large ROMs (40–64 MB) failed to open («No se pudo leer») after playing other games in the same session: Conker, Paper Mario, Pokémon Stadium 2, Smash Remix, Resident Evil 2.
- Star Fox 64: coloured noise during the «Nintendo presents» logo.
- Super Mario Odyssey 64 (hack) ran far too fast.
- Interpolation turned on mid-game no longer stretches the audio in heavy scenes.
Faster
- CPU recompiler: compact FPU code, a cached base register and a jump-target cache (GoldenEye and Perfect Dark 2–8 % faster in their heaviest scenes).
Known issues
- F-Zero X: some background objects are drawn over the track.
- Diddy Kong Racing, Indiana Jones, Rogue Squadron and Resident Evil 2 do not run yet (no HLE for their graphics microcode; low-level RSP emulation is in progress).
- Super Mario Odyssey 64 may crash after a while (under investigation).

Salsa64 v0.2.5 (preview)
Preview release. Fixes a console freeze in Options, adds a finer CRT mask and makes Perfect Dark smoother. Salsa64 is a Nintendo 64 emulator for the PlayStation 3 (homebrew, HEN or CFW), built around the Cell.
Español abajo.
Fixed
- Console freeze in Options (v0.2.4): with «CRT Trinitron» chosen as the filter, moving to the Filter row in Options froze the PS3. Fixed. If your console froze there, just install this version: your settings load fine now.
- Fewer copies back to N64 memory: after a change in screen width (Perfect Dark's intro, GoldenEye after the mission screens) the emulator copied every frame back and waited for it. Perfect Dark's intro now runs at full speed with almost no copies.
New
- Mask density for the «CRT máscara» filter: Normal or Fine (smaller, closer dots). In Options, per game, or live from «Imagen» in the pause menu (START + SELECT).
Everything from v0.2.4 still applies (Smash KO fix, the five CRT filters, Conker fix, pause menu, cheats, box art).

Salsa64 v0.2.4 (preview)
✅ Fixed in v0.2.5 / Arreglado en la v0.2.5: v0.2.4 could freeze the console when «CRT Trinitron» was selected in Options. Please update.
Preview release. Super Smash Bros. no longer freezes on the first KO, and five experimental CRT filters. Salsa64 is a Nintendo 64 emulator for the PlayStation 3 (homebrew, HEN or CFW), built around the Cell.
Español abajo.
Fixed
- Super Smash Bros. and Smash Remix no longer freeze on the first KO. The game keeps code and pointers in the margins of its z-buffer, and in the KO it draws a mask there; copies back to N64 memory now write only what the real hardware could have drawn. The
fbfx.cfgworkaround is no longer needed (remove it if you created it). - Stretched textures on the Hyrule Castle stage (and the Kongo Jungle leaves) in Smash.
New
- Five CRT filters made for Salsa64, still experimental: shadow mask, a small Trinitron TV over RGB, S-Video or composite, and a big Trinitron. Pick one in Options, per game, or live from «Imagen» in the pause menu (START + SELECT). While a CRT filter is on, the internal scale is capped at 3× (no visible difference above it). Measured on a real PS3: all five fit in the frame time at 1080p.
- Multiplayer: the plan for 2–4 DualShock 3 controllers is in docs/multijugador.md (Spanish). Several controllers may already work; tell us how it goes in the compatibility thread.
Everything from v0.2.3 still applies (Conker fix, pause menu, cheats, box art, 16:9, languages).
Install

Salsa64 v0.2.3 (preview)
Preview release. Fixes Conker and adds a pause menu, cheats, box art and more. Salsa64 is a Nintendo 64 emulator for the PlayStation 3 (homebrew, HEN or CFW), built around the Cell.
Español abajo.
Fixed
- Conker's Bad Fur Day froze on a black screen right after the «For Mature» screen in 0.2.1 and 0.2.2. Fixed: the z-buffer clear now respects the screen clipping like the real hardware, instead of overwriting game data. Thanks to everyone who reported it.
- Conker also no longer waits 25–30 s on a black screen at boot. Games with Nintendo's boot code now start with the CPU timer where the real console leaves it, so several of them (Zelda, Mario Kart 64, Smash, Mario Party…) reach their first screen a bit sooner, as on a real N64.
New — contributed by VIDEOGAMES SCZ
- Pause menu with START + SELECT: resume, save or load a state (10 slots), cheats, FPS counter and quit.
- Cheats: Project64 and RetroArch
.chtfiles in/dev_hdd0/salsa64/cheats(□ on a game in the list, or SELECT + □ in game). - Box art: PNG files in
/dev_hdd0/salsa64/covers, found by ROM name, game code or RetroArch-style name. - 16:9 aspect, simple image filters (smooth, sharp, scanlines), per-game settings (SELECT on a game) and six menu languages (Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese).
- Downloading box art and cheats from the menu exists but is off by default (experimental: the PS3 only speaks old TLS).
New
- «Imagen» in the pause menu: change the filter, aspect, overscan and internal scale of the running game live, and «Guardar para este juego» to keep them for that game.
Known issues
- Super Smash Bros. still freezes on the first KO. Workaround:
/dev_hdd0/salsa64/fbfx.cfgcontaining1(remove it for other games). - Compatibility list (Spanish): docs/compatibilidad.md. Report problems with the issue form and attach
/dev_hdd0/salsa64/salsa64.logcopied right after quitting.

Arreglado

Salsa64 v0.2.2 (preview)
Preview release. Performance update to v0.2.1. Salsa64 is a Nintendo 64 emulator for the PlayStation 3 (homebrew, HEN or CFW), built around the Cell.
Español abajo.
What's new
- Faster CPU emulation. The dynamic recompiler now generates about 23 % less PowerPC code per N64 instruction, so more of it fits in the PPE's small cache. Measured on a real PS3: the heaviest parts of the GoldenEye Dam run 6–12 % more frames per second, and Perfect Dark is 3–7 % faster per instruction. No change in what the games do (verified instruction by instruction against the interpreter).
- Z on both triggers. An N64 button can now take one or two DualShock 3 buttons. Put
Z = L2 R2in/dev_hdd0/salsa64/controles.cfgto use either trigger. - Diagnostics for contributors: time sampling of the recompiled code (
muestreofile) and an optional per-game recompiler profile (perfil-activofile, off by default; the profile holds no game code).
Everything from v0.2.0 and v0.2.1 still applies, including the compatibility list and known issues (Super Smash Bros. still freezes on the first KO; workaround: /dev_hdd0/salsa64/fbfx.cfg containing 1).

Salsa64 v0.2.1 (preview)
Preview release. Bug-fix update to v0.2.0. Salsa64 is a Nintendo 64 emulator for the PlayStation 3 (homebrew, HEN or CFW), built around the Cell.
Español abajo.
Fixed
- Donkey Kong 64: the camera no longer zooms in and out every couple of seconds. The game reads the depth buffer from N64 memory to check whether DK is hidden, and the emulator never wrote the depth clear back, so DK always looked hidden.
- Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Navi's glow and the torch halos are drawn again (same cause).
- Zelda: Ocarina of Time: no more hitch when entering pre-rendered rooms (Kokiri shop, Link's house, castle town…). The JPEG decoding of those backgrounds now runs on a free SPE with vector code: 0.3 ms of emulation time per room instead of 68 ms.
Everything in v0.2.0 still applies, including the compatibility list and known issues (Super Smash Bros. still freezes on the first KO; workaround: /dev_hdd0/salsa64/fbfx.cfg containing 1).

Salsa64 v0.2.0 (preview)
Preview release. Salsa64 is a Nintendo 64 emulator for the PlayStation 3 (homebrew, HEN or CFW), built around the Cell: the PPE runs the N64 CPU through a dynamic recompiler, the SPEs run the RSP (graphics and audio HLE), and the RSX draws at up to 5× the original resolution.
Español abajo.
What's new since v0.1.0
Games
- Donkey Kong 64: from ~20 % to full speed. The recompiler no longer flushes its code cache every time the game toggles the FPU register mode (it did so ~260 times per second). The interlaced high-resolution logos, the "zoom" every other frame and the black zipper scene are fixed.
- Majora's Mask is playable: FlashRAM saves (128 KB, kept in save states too), the end-of-day bell zoom, the Scarecrow dance and Zelda's memory blur, and the telescope lens.
- Perfect Dark: intro at 60 fps (texture decoding moved to the SPEs and trimmed to what is sampled), and the rooftop motion blur at full resolution, read straight from the RSX.
- Star Fox 64: no longer freezes after 5 seconds, no static at the top of the screen, no flicker in game.
- Banjo-Kazooie: boots like the real CIC 6103 does (its copy protection used to scramble the camera); intro fade fixed.
- Conker: the face is no longer black. Zelda: N64 logo lines and Link's tunic fixed. Mario Kart 64: the black area above the Luigi Raceway wall is gone.
Features
- PS button: the game pauses while the XMB menu is open and comes back cleanly.
- START + SELECT asks before leaving the game (can be turned off in the menu options).
Performance
- The graphics SPE does less work per draw (combiner results are reused while their inputs don't change).
- Framebuffer copies no longer stall emulation (Perfect Dark intro, Star Fox logo).

Known issues
- Super Smash Bros. (and Smash Remix) freeze on the first KO. Workaround: create
/dev_hdd0/salsa64/fbfx.cfgcontaining1(turns off framebuffer copies back to N64 memory; some textures look stretched). Remove it for other games. - GoldenEye: thin blue lines along some polygon seams.
- Banjo-Kazooie: the jigsaw puzzle screens are black.
- Conker: shadows look square.

Compatibilidad: a velocidad completa Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Majora's Mask, Paper Mario, Mario Party 1 y 3 y Donkey Kong 64. Jugables: Perfect Dark, GoldenEye, Conker, Star Fox 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Kirby 64, Pokémon Stadium 2 y Pokémon Snap, con los defectos de arriba. Todavía no: Banjo-Tooie, F-Zero X, Diddy Kong Racing, Indiana Jones y Resident Evil 2. Doom 64 va al ~40 %.
Problema conocido importante: Super Smash Bros.
