Installation

Requirements: macOS 14 Sonoma or later · Apple Silicon and Intel (universal binary).

Homebrew (recommended)

brew install --cask roypadina/tap/pullping

Release zip

Download PullPing.zip from the latest release, unzip it and move PullPing.app to /Applications.

First launch (not notarized)

PullPing is signed with a self-made certificate, not notarized, so macOS may block the first launch. Either:

  • open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to PullPing, or
  • clear the quarantine flag once:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/PullPing.app

A Welcome window then explains where PullPing lives and offers to open it at login (you can change it later in Settings → General → Open at Login). PullPing never adds itself silently. Settings → General → About → Welcome Guide… opens the window again. Then add your first account: see Accounts and tokens.

PullPing is a menu-bar app and has no Dock icon. Opening it again from /Applications shows its window.

The Homebrew cask also puts the pullping command on your PATH (since 0.5.0), for agent automations. From the release zip, link it yourself: ln -s /Applications/PullPing.app/Contents/MacOS/PullPing /usr/local/bin/pullping.

Launch at login

Settings → General → Open at Login. PullPing has to be in /Applications: elsewhere the setting says "Move PullPing to Applications to open it at login." If macOS asks for approval, click Allow in Login Items…. The item shows up in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.

Upgrade

PullPing 0.6.0 and later check for a new version once a day and ask before installing it; tick Automatically download and install updates in that prompt to skip the question. Check by hand with Check for Updates… in the About window. An update installed this way needs no xattr step. Homebrew works too:

brew upgrade --cask pullping

Your accounts, tokens and choices are kept.

Upgrade only: once 0.4.0 or later has run, an older version cannot read its data. Going back from 0.4.0 to 0.3.0 moves the state aside (state.broken.json) and resets settings; see the FAQ.

Uninstall

  1. Remove your accounts in Settings → Accounts → Remove… (this deletes each token from the keychain), then quit PullPing.

  2. Homebrew: brew uninstall --cask pullping. Otherwise delete /Applications/PullPing.app.

  3. Delete its data: ~/Library/Application Support/PullPing and ~/Library/Preferences/com.padina.pullping.plist, and /usr/local/bin/pullping if you linked it.

  4. If you skipped step 1, list and delete the leftover keychain items:

    security dump-keychain login.keychain-db | grep -o 'com.padina.pullping.token[.A-Za-z0-9-]*' | sort -u
    security delete-generic-password -s com.padina.pullping.token.<id>
  5. If you enabled launch at login, it is removed with the app; check System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.
