GrokGauge 0.9.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 17 Oct 23:18

GrokGauge 0.9.2: usage history synced across your Macs, service status dots for xAI and Cursor, pick-and-sort for "Grok by product", guided Grok CLI setup and a "What's new from xAI" section.

GrokGauge 0.9.2 dropdown with the service status row

Install or upgrade

brew install --cask stevencombs/tap/grokgauge # new install
brew update && brew upgrade --cask grokgauge # from an earlier version

Or download GrokGauge-0.9.2.zip below (universal: Apple silicon and Intel; macOS 14 Sonoma or later) and check it against GrokGauge-0.9.2.zip.sha256.

Gatekeeper: GrokGauge is open source and ad-hoc signed, not notarized by Apple. The Homebrew cask removes the download quarantine flag from GrokGauge.app only, so it opens normally. If you install from the zip by hand, right-click the app and choose Open the first time, or run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/GrokGauge.app.

What's new in 0.9.2

Added

  • Usage history synced across your Macs. The 7-day graphs now show readings from every Mac, not just this one. Each Mac writes only its own small file, <sync folder>/GrokGauge/history/<machine-id>.json (written atomically), and reads and merges everyone's. Usage is account-wide, so readings for the same product in the same 10-minute window are combined by taking the highest, never added; Grok and Grok Bot stay separate, entries older than the 8-day window are dropped, and a lone dip from one Mac's slightly older reading isn't drawn as a reset. The files hold only percentages, timestamps, an anonymous per-Mac id (a hash of the hardware UUID) and the Mac's name — never tokens or anything from ~/.grok.
  • The sync folder is the one Settings › Sync already uses; if none is set, GrokGauge looks for a MacSyncing folder in your cloud-drive folders (Google Drive, Insync, Dropbox…). Settings › Sync › Usage history has a Sync history across Macs switch (on by default; it does nothing until there's a folder), Change…, Use iCloud Drive, the number of Macs and the last sync, plus Sync Now. With no folder, history stays on this Mac exactly as before.
  • GrokGauge watches the history folder (and re-reads it every minute and whenever the dropdown opens), so other Macs' readings appear on their own. Insync/Drive conflict copies are merged; partial, corrupt or foreign files are skipped (never deleted) and listed in Settings › Diagnostics › History sync, with the folder, the number of Macs and the last sync time.
  • Pick and sort the "Grok by product" rows. Settings › Layout › Grok by product has a checkbox per product, a drag-to-reorder list (arrows and VoiceOver actions too), a Sort menu (My order, the default; Highest usage first, with ties in My order; Alphabetical) and Reset. Products xAI adds later appear at the end, shown. Unchecking every product hides the section. The choices are part of your settings, so they go into Export/Import and settings sync; settings from older versions get every product, the standard order and My order. Reset Layout to Default resets them too.
  • Service status row. Two dots in the dropdown, right under the rings: xAI (data.x.ai/status/summary.json, falling back to the status.x.ai/feed.xml RSS if the summary fails or changes shape) and Cursor (status.cursor.com/api/v2/summary.json, the home of Grok Bot and Cloud Agents, which are named first when affected). Green "All systems normal"; orange for degraded, partial outage or maintenance; red for an outage; gray when a check failed. The text names what's affected (xAI: Degraded: Imagine, Cursor: Outage: Cloud Agents); the tooltip and VoiceOver label add the details and last check time; clicking opens status.x.ai or status.cursor.com. Checked about every 5 minutes and when the dropdown opens (at most every 30 s), backing off after failures (5, 10, 20, then 30 min). Public pages only, no login.
  • Settings › Layout: a Service status section (on by default, reorderable) with xAI and Cursor switches and an optional, off-by-default notification when a service goes from normal to an outage. The choices sync with your other settings; settings from older versions get both dots on and the row placed after the rings. Settings › Diagnostics › Service status shows each source's last result, error and URL. New --print-status debug flag.
  • Guided Grok CLI setup. When the Grok CLI isn't installed, the dropdown says so (instead of only "run grok login", which fails with "command not found") and offers Copy install command (curl -fsSL https://x.ai/cli/install.sh | bash, xAI's official installer), Install in Terminal… (asks first, then runs it in Terminal) and Open Terminal. Once installed it shows Sign in to Grok with Copy “grok login” and the ~/.grok/bin/grok login fallback. GrokGauge re-checks when the dropdown opens and every few seconds while setup is pending, and switches to usage as soon as auth.json appears. Diagnostics and --print-usage show the same status.
  • What's new from xAI section in the dropdown: the 4 newest items from xAI news (x.ai sitemap), the API release notes (docs.x.ai), Grok CLI updates (x.ai/cli/stable vs. the installed CLI, with the grok update command and a Copy button; GrokGauge never runs it), the Grok and Grok Bot iPhone apps (Apple's public lookup) and Grok Bot for Mac (its installed version, with Open). Unread dots, Mark all read, links to @xai and @grok on X. The first check marks everything already out as read. No login or API key.
  • Settings › What's New tab: show the section, per-source switches, check interval (6/12/24 h; Grok CLI every 2 h), optional notifications (off by default, one summary per check), Check Now, Mark All Read. Choices sync with your other settings; read marks stay on this Mac.
  • Settings › Diagnostics lists each What's new source with its status, last check and last error.
  • Support GrokGauge: a Tip via PayPal button in Settings › About, a Support GrokGauge… link in the dropdown footer and the app menu, a PayPal badge in the README, and .github/FUNDING.yml (GitHub's Sponsor button).

Changed

  • The dropdown's gear opens a Settings… / Quit GrokGauge menu, like ClipGauge.

Fixed

  • The dropdown could be taller than the screen (graphs cut off, no scrolling). It's now capped to the screen; the middle sections scroll.

Disclaimer

GrokGauge is an unofficial community project. It is not made, endorsed, or supported by xAI, or by Anysphere, the maker of the Grok Bot app. "Grok" and "SuperGrok" are trademarks of xAI. GrokGauge reads an undocumented Grok CLI endpoint and Grok Bot's local cache, either of which can change without notice. Your Grok login stays on your Mac and is sent only to xAI. The service status dots read only the public status.x.ai and status.cursor.com pages, with no login.

GrokGauge 0.9.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 08 Oct 20:19

GrokGauge 0.9.1 is the first release since 0.3.0. It includes everything from 0.9.0, which was never published on its own, plus the 0.9.1 fixes and additions.

GrokGauge dropdown with daily bar history

Install or upgrade

brew install --cask stevencombs/tap/grokgauge # new install
brew update && brew upgrade --cask grokgauge # from 0.3.0

Or download GrokGauge-0.9.1.zip below (universal: Apple silicon and Intel; macOS 14 Sonoma or later) and check it against GrokGauge-0.9.1.zip.sha256.

Highlights

New in 0.9.1

  • Fixed: "Grok returned an error (400)" that wouldn't clear. A reused HTTP/3 connection could stay pinned to a failing server instance. Every refresh now uses its own connection, a 400/408/421/5xx or dropped connection is retried once right away on a new one, and a 400 keeps the last good reading while GrokGauge retries with backoff.
  • Daily history graphs: "Last 7 days" now shows one bar per day with the highest % reached that day, in your level colors, with weekday labels, today highlighted and a ↺ mark on the reset day.
  • Graph style: Bars (default), Line or Area, picked from thumbnail tiles in Settings › Layout. Separate Grok history and Grok Bot history toggles (turn both off to hide the section).
  • Grok Bot readings from an earlier day show the date ("as of Oct 7, 5:38 PM").
  • Diagnostics shows the server's own error message for HTTP errors (sanitized: no tokens, emails or ids).
  • Settings › About shows who makes GrokGauge, with links to YouTube and email.

From 0.9.0 (first released here)

  • Settings window (gear button or ⌘,): Layout, Menu Bar, Colors & Alerts, Sync, Diagnostics and About tabs; changes apply immediately.
  • Layout: show, hide and reorder dropdown sections and action buttons; rings side by side, stacked, or one combined ring.
  • Menu bar: higher percent, both (G · B), Grok only, Grok Bot only, or the logo alone tinted by status; optional days-to-reset suffix; hide the logo.
  • Colors & levels: a two-handle slider for the warning/critical levels (default 80/90), custom colors with a warning when two are hard to tell apart, and a colorblind-friendly preset (Okabe–Ito). Notifications follow the levels unless you unlink them. Refresh every 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes.
  • Sync between Macs through a folder you already sync (Google Drive, iCloud Drive, Dropbox…): newest change wins, preferences only, never logins, usage numbers or history. Export / Import settings as JSON.
  • Diagnostics: per-source status, last success/error, login expiry, and a Copy Report button that never includes tokens, emails, account ids or paths.
  • Pace: "On track (≈40% at reset)" or "At this pace you'll hit 100% by Fri 3 PM".
  • Update check (optional, daily) against this repo's public releases, with an "Update available" banner. Nothing installs automatically.
  • Global shortcut (default ⌃⌥G) to open the dropdown, and an Open X shortcut button (opens the X app or x.com; no X data is read).
  • Accessibility: VoiceOver labels and values for rings, bars, graphs and buttons; Reduce Motion and Increase Contrast support.
  • Smarter retries: exponential backoff, and a quiet grace period after wake or a network change.
  • If xAI changes the usage reply, GrokGauge says "xAI changed something" instead of showing a misleading 0%.

GrokGauge 0.3.0: Grok + Grok Bot usage

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 08 Oct 03:10

GrokGauge keeps your SuperGrok and Grok Bot weekly usage in the macOS menu bar.

GrokGauge dropdown (sample data: Grok 42%, Grok Bot 86%)

What's in 0.3.0

  • Grok Bot tracking. A second ring sits next to Grok's and shows Grok Bot's weekly usage, the same number Grok Bot shows under Settings › Usage & Billing. GrokGauge reads the small usage cache Grok Bot keeps on your Mac. It makes no network request for Grok Bot and uses no Grok Bot login or Keychain item.
  • Two ring gauges, one look. Both use the same colors: green up to 80%, orange 81–90%, red above 90%.
  • Reset times for both. Days to reset, a live countdown, and the exact reset time in your time zone. When Grok and Grok Bot reset at different times, you get one clearly labeled line for each.
  • Menu bar. Shows the higher of the two percents by default. Turn on Show both percentages in menu bar to see G 0% · B 9%.
  • Separate 80% / 90% notifications for Grok and for Grok Bot.
  • --print-usage and --json now include Grok Bot.

From earlier releases

  • 0.2.0: GrokGauge renews your Grok CLI login automatically, so you don't need to run grok login again. It uses the same OAuth refresh flow as the official CLI, and it respects the CLI's lock file and the format of ~/.grok/auth.json.
  • 0.1.0: Menu bar meter, ring gauge, per-product breakdown (Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build, API), Extra Usage Credits, Refresh now, Launch at login, and Open Grok / Open Grok Bot.

Install

Homebrew

brew install --cask stevencombs/tap/grokgauge

Manual: download GrokGauge-0.3.0.zip below, unzip it, drag GrokGauge.app to /Applications, and open it.

Requirements: macOS 14 or later (Apple silicon or Intel), a SuperGrok plan, and the Grok CLI signed in once (grok login). Grok Bot is optional; its ring appears only when Grok Bot is installed.

Gatekeeper

GrokGauge is open source and ad-hoc signed, not notarized by Apple. If you install it with Homebrew, the cask clears the download quarantine flag on GrokGauge.app only, so it opens normally. If you downloaded the zip yourself and macOS says it can't verify the app, either open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway, or run:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/GrokGauge.app

SHA-256 of GrokGauge-0.3.0.zip: f2a1ce893646ac18413f234ddbfb4f9e522691d278f42b61dd2caebc76a6c687

Privacy

  • Your Grok tokens go only to xAI: cli-chat-proxy.grok.com for usage and auth.x.ai for renewing your login.
  • Grok Bot's numbers are read from a local file. Nothing about Grok Bot is sent anywhere.
  • No analytics or telemetry.

See the README for the exact files and hosts.

Unofficial. GrokGauge is a community project. It is not made, endorsed, or supported by xAI, or by Anysphere, the maker of the Grok Bot app. "Grok" and "SuperGrok" are trademarks of xAI. GrokGauge relies on undocumented data sources that can change without notice.
