Getting Started

Installation

From a WordPress administration screen:

  1. Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for WP User Groups.
  3. Select Install Now, then Activate.

You can also upload the plugin ZIP or install it manually in wp-content/plugins/wp-user-groups.

First setup

Activation does not require a setup wizard and does not create custom database tables. Two user taxonomies are registered automatically:

  • Groups (user-group) for general membership
  • Types (user-type) for an additional classification

Go to Users → Groups or Users → Types, create the terms that describe your organization, then edit a user to assign them.

A useful starter model

Groups and WordPress roles solve different problems. A role controls what a user may do; a group describes where the user belongs. For example:

  • Roles: Administrator, Editor, Author
  • Groups: Community, Editorial, Engineering
  • Types: Staff, Contractor, Volunteer

Avoid duplicating roles as Groups unless another integration expects that taxonomy.

Where data is stored

Memberships use WordPress terms and term relationships. Disabling or removing the plugin does not delete those records. If the same taxonomies are registered again later, the terms and relationships are available again.

Permissions

The default taxonomies allow users with list_users to manage terms. Assigning ordinary, unmanaged terms requires read plus permission to edit the target user. Custom taxonomies can supply their own capability map.

See Custom User Taxonomies for managed and exclusive taxonomies.
