Releases: zexk/bbtracker
Release list
v0.5.0
New: MGS4 Flashbacks tab
- Added a Flashbacks checklist tab for MGS4, sorted in campaign order. MGS4 already had Feats. Flashbacks now joins the F4 cycle alongside it.
- Progress shows unique flashbacks found (out of 222) alongside the raw trigger count, instead of counting repeat triggers as progress.
Overlay customization
- Overlay position, size, UI scale, opacity, initial visibility, checklist height, hotkeys (toggle/tab/scroll keys), and log verbosity are now all configurable in
bbtracker.ini. - Optional
mouse=1enables a cursor, clickable tabs, title-bar close/move, and a resize grip. - Log level filtering added (
off/error/warn/info/debug).
Visual polish
- Bundled the Inter font with FreeType hinting and tabular digits for cleaner, steadier text.
- Base font size raised to 14; panel titles, tabs, ranks, grades, and MGS4 emblem names are now emphasized in bold/semibold.
- Removed redundant borders around scrollable sections; summary values that used to clip (MGS2 campaign/pull-up/special-item strings) now fit their content width.
- Enlarged MGS2 Bluff dog tag rows and dropped redundant MGS2 summary qualifiers.
- Simplified the Peace Walker insignia tab by dropping its progress bar (the count is still shown).
Fixes
- MGS1: fixed the Japanese-version game timer occasionally unlatching, and its time offset is now assigned directly from the known disc serial instead of a clock-based heuristic. Also fixed the tracker sometimes never detecting stats at all on some setups (including under Proton) due to an overly narrow memory scan.
- MGS2: Dog Tags tab now shows only the active chapter (Tanker or Plant) during full-campaign runs instead of mixing both; refined dog-tag availability gates.
- MGS3: Kerotan checklist now follows actual collection-route order (previously just grouped by stage).
- MGS4: overlay no longer breaks after certain scene transitions (e.g. an Act 4 return) by rebuilding it when the game swaps its render target; the displayed career emblem now matches the game's own results-screen pick logic (e.g. LITTLE GRAY vs. CHICKEN priority).
- Peace Walker: fixed a false "grade 5" report from an unresolved camaraderie counter, Heroism intermittently reading as unavailable, submachine gun takedowns not being counted, inaccurate weapon-type naming in the codename panel, and bogus co-op ratio/codename results caused by reading the wrong save object.
- Reduced overlay frame stalls by bounding background discovery scans.

v0.4.1
Fixes
- overlay: auto-fit child panels horizontally, so MGS4 codenames are no longer cut off (f10d226)
- mgspw: size the save snapshot to cover the result time field, fixing the Peace Walker startup crash (12ca7f2)

v0.4.0
Ghost Babel joins bbtracker and MGS2 gains full dog tag tracking in v0.4.0.
New game: Ghost Babel
- Added support for Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (
MGS_BC2viabbtracker_babel.asi), with live career rank projection and counters. - The panel adopts Ghost Babel's Game Boy Color look: black plates, amber frame, and colors taken from the in-game HUD.
- Projected codenames use the difficulty's own top-rank name (HOUND, DOBERMAN, FOX, or BIG BOSS).
Highlights
- New MGS2 Dog Tags tab: collection progress grouped by chapter, with dog tag variants, tough guards, and story gates. MGS2 now joins the F4 tab cycle.
- MGS2 runs latch at the chapter intro, and the Summary shows stage time with separate pull-up counters.
- Peace Walker tracks stun rod KOs and non-lethal (sleep/stun) explosives in mission and career totals.
- MG1 and MG2 now fall through the full ten-tier codename ladder down to CHICKEN instead of dropping the projected codename on slower runs.
Fixes and polish
- Overlay panels fit the active tab, scale automatically for high-DPI and 4K displays, and stay visible with stats intact through loading and transition screens.
- MGS2: fixed special-item usage tracking, radar-use detection, and Plant campaign labeling; removed the unreliable alert display.
- MGS3's Kerotan checklist is now ordered by stage.
- Peace Walker: weapon categories a mission doesn't use show n/a, unavailable career values are labeled, and the panel got better contrast, spacing, and resizing.
- MGS4's Chicken emblem now appears in the Feats tab.
- MG1 Easy runs allow nine alerts, matching the game.
- Fixed an MGS1 crash on startup and hardened memory reads across every game so scene changes can't cause crashes or stale stats.
- Tagged releases are now also published to Nexus Mods.

v0.3.1
Peace Walker
- Mission timer now tracks the whole mission instead of resetting on area changes.
- Timer freezes at the game's official completion time on the results screen.
- Current-run stats remain visible through cutscenes, loading screens, and mission results, then clear on return to a hub or menu.
- Added current-mission hold-ups, CQC uses, and Heroism.
- Added lifetime CQC uses to Global Stats.

v0.2.1
MGS3 Kerotan reliability and MGS4 tooling update.
Source changes
- Fixed MGS3 Kerotan tracking by reading the 64-bit hit mask from story-state offset
0x242instead of a stats-relative address whose pointer spacing changed between rooms and cutscenes and could report false counts. - Simplified MGS3 Kerotan handling by removing stale-copy accumulation and title-transition workarounds now unnecessary with the stable story-state field.
- Updated current-area Kerotan lookup to accept runtime area-code suffixes such as
_0. - Changed the MGS4 stage selector to launch normally by default. Added
None (normal launch)so the mod can remain installed while restarting without a--stageargument. - Added preliminary Peace Walker Master Collection reverse-engineering documentation covering the target Steam build, protected executable layout, section hashes, static anchors, save observations, and next analysis steps.
- Expanded MGS4 analysis tools with separate Bandana and Stealth Camouflage use flags, Drebin-point fields, and a validated
--set-drebinlive-memory option. - Clarified MGS4 research notes for the special-item bitmask and Drebin-related fields, and bumped tracker, stage-selector, and rule-check package versions to
0.2.1.
Verified behavior
MGS3 story-relative Kerotan state was validated in a controlled Virtuous Mission run across pointer-spacing changes. MGS4 save inspection and live-memory write paths include self-checks. Release archives were built for all five game-specific tracker packages, the combined package, and the MGS4 stage selector.

v0.2.0
MGS4 tracking and Direct3D 12 support update.
Source changes
- Added full Metal Gear Solid 4 tracking for Master Collection Vol. 2, including live projected emblems, rank requirements, run stats, named areas, flashbacks, and a dedicated Feats tab with progress for all 23 special emblems.
- Added MGS4 memory probing for difficulty, alerts, kills, continues, recovery items, special items, play time, CQC, headshots, knife defeats, pickups, hold-ups, searches, militia interactions, movement feats, box/drum time, and weapon collection.
- Added active ranked-run detection for MGS4. Main menu, standalone Mission Briefing mode, and unknown extra-stage families now show
no active ranked runinstead of stale stats. - Added Direct3D 12 overlay support alongside Direct3D 11, with automatic renderer selection and MGS4-specific visual styling.
- Added a separate MGS4 stage-selector micro-mod: replacement launcher for direct stage startup plus an in-game F6 stage picker.
- Published a technical MGS4 reverse-engineering reference covering executable layout,
linkvarbuf, stat offsets, stage codes, emblem predicates, archive formats, and supporting analysis scripts. - Moved initial tracker placement to center-left for every supported game and polished MGS4 Feats wording, completion colors, and scrollbar styling.
- Added MGS4 tracker and stage-selector release archives and bumped package/check versions to 0.2.0.
Verified behavior
MGS4 tracking was validated live across multiple areas and counters under Direct3D 12, with Direct3D 11 loading also confirmed. Stage selection, ranked-run exclusions, and named-area mapping were smoke-tested. Cross-compiled tracker and selector builds pass; native rank-rule tests pass for MG/MG2, MGS1, MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4.

- Improved MGS1 edition detection for western, Japanese original, and Integral discs; added correct regional timer mapping and difficulty handling.
- Hid overlay stats outside active ranked runs across all supported games.
- Moved memory probes off render thread, preventing scan work from stalling frame presentation.
- Reduced MGS2/MGS3 area logging to actual transitions and tightened MGS3 pointer validation.
- Simplified non-Nix Windows build setup, added direnv support, removed obsolete Proton override tooling, and bumped package/check versions to 0.1.3.
Verified behavior
All four ASI packages were built and deployed; all five supported games were smoke-tested in game. Native rank-rule tests pass for MG/MG2, MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3.

v0.1.2
MGS3 tracking and overlay update.
Source changes
- Added MGS3 area-code names and a per-area Kerotan marker (
xor-) beside theN / 64total. - Changed the MGS3 Kerotan read offset from
0x31D6to0x6532. The probe now waits for a post-title stats-block replacement, ignores the transition fill pattern, unions valid masks across runtime copies, and rotates the final 64-bit mask by one bit for checklist order. - Corrected MGS3 special-item bit labels to
Stealth Camo,Infinity Face Paint, andEZ Gun. - Moved area text below the stats table, changed game-window alpha from
0.96to0.80, and added square, themed MGS3 scrollbars. - Expanded README project scope and feature documentation, documented current Kerotan probe behavior and Snake's Revenge research, and bumped Nix package/check versions to
0.1.2.
Verified behavior
Kerotan counter was tested in game and is functional. After loading a save, count remains empty until game replaces title stats block, normally after one screen transition.

Changes
- Added
sea lousestatus asYESorNOto MGS2 live-statistics rows. - Added numeric
clearing escapescount beside existing health, times seen, mechs destroyed, pull-ups, and alert-state rows. - Both values were already read by MGS2 memory probe and consumed by special-rank rules; this release makes them visible in overlay.
- Bumped Nix package and rule-check versions from
0.1.0to0.1.1.
