codex-long-jobs v0.4.2
This release distributes the updated skill instructions for the Codex extension for VS Code. Existing users can discover it through the configured release check.
Changes
- Include the Codex extension for VS Code in skill discovery and clarify its name in the project introduction.
- Keep job launch, cancellation, and delivery instructions first. Place client guidance after delivery selection and release checks at the end.
- Keep acceptance records in reference documents rather than the skill entrypoint.
- Explain how to check queue capability, recover the original conversation, and avoid resending accepted notifications after client interruption.
Validation and scope
Real Linux Remote-SSH acceptance with skill v0.4.1, extension 26.917.62051, and system Codex CLI 0.157.1 covered idle and busy sessions, concurrent completions, conversation switching, panel and project-window closure, remote connection closure, a client-side proxy failure, extension backend SIGKILL, VS Code Server main-process SIGKILL, failure notifications, and explicit cancellation. Artifacts, durable state, queue attempts, continuation, and user-visible recovery were checked.
The observed recovery occurred after reconnecting or reopening. Model execution while disconnected is not established. Service tests targeted individual processes, not the complete process tree, shared Codex daemon, or host. The implementation of job supervision and notification delivery is unchanged.
GitHub CI verifies Python 3.10 through 3.14, lint, formatting, shell entrypoints, and subprocess branch coverage. Restart Codex after installing to load the revised skill instructions. Existing update preferences and background jobs are preserved.
codex-long-jobs v0.4.1
This release makes log access independent of tmux by default and adds configurable release notifications.
Changes
- Default to no managed log viewer, including when running inside tmux. Start and status output provide an absolute log path and a shell-quoted follow command for any terminal or IDE. Explicit tmux viewers remain available.
- Enable release checks once per week on new installations. Checks occur on skill use only when the configured interval has elapsed. Users can disable checks or select another interval in hours, days, or weeks.
- Report newer releases without installing them. Installation requires an explicit user request.
- Preserve update preferences across reinstallations and throttle failed or interrupted checks. Concurrent callers do not issue duplicate requests.
- Correct the queue-timeout regression test for processes terminated before CLI initialization.
Validation and compatibility
- 93 tests passed locally, with 83.78% subprocess-aware branch coverage.
- Ruff, formatting, and Skill validation passed. GitHub CI validates Python 3.10 through 3.14 and shell entrypoints.
- A real isolated GitHub release query and immediate interval-limited follow-up passed.
- Supervision, cancellation, job state, and notification delivery contracts are unchanged. Running workers retain their loaded code; do not restart healthy jobs merely to update the skill.
- Restart Codex after installation to load the revised skill instructions. Existing preferences are preserved; installations without update settings initialize weekly checks.
See references/updates.md for configuration and manual update instructions. Resolves #2.
codex-long-jobs v0.4.0
Highlights
- Prefer
codex queue --threadfor completion delivery when supported, without relying on tmux pane metadata. - Retain validated TUI delivery as a compatibility path for older Codex CLI versions.
- Record queue acceptance separately from session consumption and prevent automatic resend after timeout or interrupted dispatch.
- Add guarded migration of terminal, safely pending TUI notifications to queue delivery.
Validation
- GitHub Actions passed on Python 3.10 through 3.14, including subprocess branch coverage.
- Local smoke, 10-run stress, coverage, Ruff, format, ShellCheck, and Skill validation passed.
- Real Codex CLI 0.157.1 isolated-session acceptance covered idle, busy, and exited-TUI behavior. Queue success indicates acceptance, not consumption.
See CHANGELOG.md for details.
Codex Long Jobs v0.3.1
Highlights
- Fix TUI completion delivery when Codex renders the unique delivery token across indented visual lines.
- Use the same wrap-aware token visibility check before the first Enter and during missed-Enter retries.
- Add configurable wrapped-composer simulation and end-to-end regression tests that preserve one-paste delivery.
- Add an offline fixed-release-worktree installer for reproducible local skill installation.
Safety and compatibility
- Preserve the existing state schema and long
[codex-long-jobs:<name>:<nonce>]token format. - Continue to paste each completion prompt once and retry only Enter while the exact unique token remains visible.
- Keep ambiguous composer states pending instead of blindly submitting or pasting again.
- Existing job records remain readable; already-running v0.3.0 workers continue using their in-memory runtime until they exit.
Validation
- 72 automated tests across lifecycle, delivery, cancellation, rebind, installation, and race behavior.
- 81.26 percent combined branch coverage, above the 80 percent gate.
- Ten consecutive stress-suite passes.
- Ruff, ShellCheck, and the OpenAI skill validator passed.
- GitHub Actions passed on Python 3.10 through 3.14.
- The installed v0.3.1 fixed worktree passed targeted wrapped-token tests, the full automated suite, installer verification, and the real-host tmux viewer test.
See CHANGELOG.md for the complete change list.
Codex Long Jobs v0.3.0
Highlights
- Add
cancel --name NAMEwith a durable request and synchronous terminal-state confirmation. - Stop the validated command process group with
SIGTERM, then escalate toSIGKILLafter a configurable grace period. - Persist
cancelledas a distinct terminal state with request, effectiveness, signal, exit, log, and delivery evidence. - Keep normal completion notification and original Codex TUI wake-up for cancelled jobs.
- Preserve the actual success or failure result when a cancellation request loses the natural-completion race.
Reliability and compatibility
- Cancellation remains functional after supervisor-only loss, and the supervisor can finalize cancellation if the worker dies during the request.
- Prelaunch cancellation suppresses command launch.
- Terminal cancellation is idempotent and does not rewrite job state.
- Nonterminal jobs created before v0.3.0 are refused because they lack the required cancellation contract.
- Unreadable records are surfaced by unfiltered
statusinstead of being silently omitted. status --jsonremains the machine-readable lifecycle and result interface. No redundantresultcommand was added.- Linux process-group validation now uses lightweight
/proc/PID/statchecks while retaining process-group and session identity protection.
Validation
- 64 automated tests across lifecycle, failure, delivery, cancellation, and race behavior.
- 83.29 percent combined branch coverage, above the 80 percent gate.
- Ten consecutive stress-suite passes.
- GitHub Actions passed on Python 3.10 through 3.14.
- Real tmux-hosted Codex CLI acceptance confirmed process-group cancellation, pending delivery while the TUI was busy, one-attempt completion submission, and automatic wake-up of the owning Codex session.
See CHANGELOG.md for the complete change list.
Codex Long Jobs v0.2.0
This release strengthens durable background execution and completion delivery for OpenAI Codex CLI.
Highlights
- A detached supervisor detects unexpected worker exit and records terminal failure.
- Commands and logs remain independent of the disposable tmux viewer.
- Cross job locking serializes simultaneous TUI completion prompts.
- Live log streaming, partial write handling, fsync checks, disk full detection, and worker time path validation improve durability.
- Anchored success markers now match complete log lines after earlier output.
- The automated suite contains 49 tests and enforces at least 80 percent branch coverage across Python 3.10 through 3.14.
See CHANGELOG.md and references/testing.md for the complete behavior and verification matrix.
Codex Long Jobs v0.1.0
