Talk:Music Sharing

Could the author of this suggestion please identify him/herself? ;) If i recall correctly, music/metadata sharing and DAAP were ideas raised by shank - the MPD (Music Player Daemon) developer - in our IRC channel, a while ago. I believe he also suggested he'd like to join the XMMS2 team to further develop these ideas, after releasing MPD v1. As for that one company and their ever so popular music software, I assume you're referring to Apple and iTunes? Please try to be as clear as possible when providing suggestions, etc - we're trying to develop software here, not read minds and guess assumptions. ;)

Well, making xmms2 as a DAAP server wouldn't be impossible. Question is if it fits. I am quite happy with not trying to bloat our *MUSIC* player as far as we can.

I wonder if DAAPD could hook into the Medialib somehow - that would seem more elegant, and it would eliminate the need to write much (any?) daap-specific code in XMMS2 itself. Not sure whether daapd or XMMS2 would have to jump through more hoops, code-wise, to make this happen.

On a related note, I wonder if autodiscovery of TCP-ready XMMS2 servers via Howl would be desirable...

Vote for DAAP

Would just like to throw in a vote for a DAAP enabled/aware XMMS2... Rhythmbox recently added code to be able to browse/play/share tunes via DAAP which I have helped test (it's in CVS) and it's a godsend! Using mt-daapd (www.mt-daapd.org) on my streaming server I'm finally able to play my music painlessly on all three platforms (Windows: iTunes, Mac: iTunes, Linux: Rhythmbox). As far as I understand (though I haven't actually checked it out), VLC also does DAAP in its latest release. It's the wave of the future as far as cross platform music sharing/browsing/streaming, gentlemen! :-)
