Release list
v0.10.0-dev.2 (dev release)
A dev release: a test build on the way to v0.10.0, for trying what's next early. It can have bugs. If you'd rather wait, stay on v0.9.0: its launcher doesn't offer dev releases.
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation. You need your own copy of the game as an Xbox 360 disc image (title 454108C0): the English, Italian and Spanish edition, which is also disc 1 of that edition's Ultimate Edition. This download contains no game code or data; the installer builds the game from your ISO on your PC.
Install or update (Windows)
- From v0.10.0-dev.1: the launcher offers this update itself (Update on its main menu).
- Otherwise: download
DAORecomp.exebelow, run it and pick your install folder (or a new one). It isn't code-signed, so Windows may warn: More info → Run anyway. An update only rebuilds what changed, and your saves, settings and mods are kept. Launchers up to v0.9.0 don't offer dev releases, so this one is installed by hand; from then on the launcher offers the next ones itself. DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.
New
- Game language: English, Italian or Spanish, in the launcher's Configure → Advanced → Game language (or
languagein the[game]section ofuserdata/config.toml). The supported disc has the game's text in all three; the voices are English in each, as in the original release. It takes effect at the next start.
Since v0.9.0 (in v0.10.0-dev.1)
- Update channels (Configure → Advanced → Update channel): Release, or Dev for dev releases like this one too.
- START menu rows for Photo Mode and Cheats.
- Frame rate guard for neural rendering: fades the network out while the GPU can't hold the frame rate, and back in when there's room.
- Motion vectors no longer crash under Wine/Proton. Thanks to @lvaskys (#1).
v0.10.0-dev.1 (dev release)
A dev release: a test build on the way to v0.10.0, for trying what's next early. It can have bugs. If you'd rather wait, stay on v0.9.0: its launcher doesn't offer dev releases.
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation. You need your own copy of the game as an Xbox 360 disc image (title 454108C0). This download contains no game code or data; the installer builds the game from your ISO on your PC.
Install or update (Windows)
- Download
DAORecomp.exebelow, run it and pick your install folder (or a new one). It isn't code-signed, so Windows may warn: More info → Run anyway. An update only rebuilds what changed, and your saves, settings and mods are kept. - Launchers up to v0.9.0 don't offer dev releases, so this one is installed by hand. From here on, the launcher offers the next dev releases, and the next release, by itself.
DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.
New
- Update channels (Configure → Advanced → Update channel): Release offers releases only; Dev offers dev releases like this one too. An install made from a dev release starts on Dev. To go back, choose Release: the launcher then waits for the next release (v0.10.0) rather than going back to an older one.
- START menu rows: Photo Mode and Cheats now have rows of their own in the game's START menu (Photo Mode below Achievements), without replacing any of the game's own.
- Frame rate guard for neural rendering: Ease off neural rendering to hold the frame rate (on by default, in the launcher and in Options → Graphics) fades the network out while the GPU can't hold the frame rate with it, and back in when there's room again. It measures the GPU's time a frame, so it does nothing when something else holds the frames back, or with the frame rate unlimited.
Fixed
v0.9.0 (pre-release)
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation: a cheats menu with the developers' own debug scripts, low latency (AMD Radeon Anti-Lag 2, NVIDIA Reflex), and NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 as a temporal upscaler.
You need your own copy of the game as an Xbox 360 disc image (title 454108C0). This download contains no game code or data; the installer builds the game from your ISO on your PC.
Install or update (Windows)
- Updating from v0.3.x or later: the launcher offers this update itself (Update on its main menu). You can also run the new
DAORecomp.exeand pick the same install folder. - New install, or updating from v0.2.0 or older: download
DAORecomp.exebelow and run it. It isn't code-signed, so Windows may warn: More info → Run anyway. Pick the ISO and an install folder, accept the build tools license, and press Install. When it's done, the same exe becomes the game's launcher. An update only rebuilds what changed, and your saves, settings and mods are kept. DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.- The installer now also downloads NVIDIA's Streamline SDK 2.14.1 (for Reflex and DLSS) and installs its DLLs, with their licenses, next to the game.
New
- Cheats menu: Options → Graphics → Open cheats in a game, or F7 in exploration or combat. The world pauses under it. Each cheat runs one of the scripts BioWare's developers left in the game (the PC version's console ran them), through the game's own script engine: Immortal Party, Win Every Skill Check, Kill Nearby Enemies, Add Gold, Add Experience and Strengthen Party. They change your save like anything else in the game, so back it up first (the launcher's Save Backups) if you may want it as it was.
- Low latency (Configure → Display → Frame rate in the launcher, or Options → Graphics): each frame starts as late as it can still be on time, so the controller is read closer to when the frame is shown. It uses AMD Radeon Anti-Lag 2 on AMD GPUs with a current driver, or NVIDIA Reflex (experimental) on NVIDIA GPUs; On + Boost adds Reflex's boost. It helps most when the GPU is the limit. Anti-Lag 2 cost no frames in tests on an RX 9070 XT. It stays off while FSR Frame Generation is on.
- NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 (experimental): a new choice of temporal upscaler on NVIDIA RTX GPUs, with the presets NVIDIA recommends for each mode. Choosing it takes effect at the next start; where it can't run, FSR upscales instead.
Changed
- Frame generation is now named FSR Frame Generation in the launcher and the game.
- Fixed the Linux build (a Windows header's name was in the wrong case).
Known issues
- Reflex and DLSS are untested: they were built without an NVIDIA GPU to try them on. If you have an RTX card, please report how they work;
userdata/xenia.logsays whether Streamline started and why not. - Kill Nearby Enemies also kills enemies the story keeps alive, so some fights may not end as they should.
- Photo mode isn't available in conversations and cutscenes.
- The DLC campaigns have only been checked to start; please report anything that goes wrong in them.
- Linux (Wine/Proton) is still untested, and neural rendering isn't installed there.
v0.8.0 (pre-release)
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation: neural rendering on AMD RDNA 4 (lmxxf's port of DLSS 5's neural rendering, built in), a photo mode, and HDR that stays on while the game's overlays are shown.
DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.- On a PC with an AMD Radeon RX 9000 series GPU, the install also compiles neural rendering's GPU kernels with the AMD driver's own compiler: a minute or two the first time, and again after a driver update.
New
- Neural rendering (experimental, AMD RDNA 4 only): the 3D scenes go through the neural rendering network of NVIDIA's DLSS 5 before temporal upscaling, run on Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs by lmxxf's MIT-licensed port, built into the game. The network's weights don't come with the game: download lmxxf's release package, then in the launcher's Configure → Graphics turn on Neural rendering and choose the package's folder. It needs temporal upscaling on, and works in SDR and HDR (the highlights above paper white keep their brightness). It's expensive: on an RX 9070 XT about 7 ms of GPU time a frame with the 900-line network and 9.5 ms with 1080 lines. Its strength applies at once in the game's Graphics tab (0 skips the network's GPU time, though it stays loaded); its quality, passes, skin protection and style take effect on the next start. F6 turns it off and on in the game, to compare.
- Photo mode: from the START menu's Photo Mode row (where the Xbox 360 version had Achievements), or L3+R3 while exploring or in combat. The world pauses and the camera flies free: the left stick moves it, the right stick turns it, the triggers lower and raise it (LB slower, RB faster), and the d-pad zooms and rolls. A takes a photo (a PNG in
Pictures\DAORecomp, cut to the chosen frame, without the overlay, in SDR when the game is in HDR); X opens the settings (field of view, roll, camera speed, frame from Full Screen and 16:9 to 32:9 or 3:2 to 9:16, and a composition grid); Y hides the overlay, BACK resets the camera, and B or START leaves.
Changed
- HDR with overlays: the on-screen keyboard, notifications and photo mode's panel are drawn over the game's HDR image at paper white, instead of the game switching to SDR while they're shown.
- Frame generation with overlays: generated frames keep being shown while an overlay is up.
- Neural rendering setup: an install on a PC without an RX 9000 series GPU removes an earlier install's neural rendering kernels (unless AMD's driver can't say which GPU it is), and the weights folder can be on a network share (
\\server\share\...).
Known issues
- Neural rendering is experimental. It loads while the logos show (they hold for a second or two: 1.7 s on an RX 9070 XT), and if it fails it turns itself off for the session;
userdata/xenia.logsays why. - Photo mode isn't available in conversations and cutscenes.
- The DLC campaigns have only been checked to start; please report anything that goes wrong in them.
- Linux (Wine/Proton) is still untested, and neural rendering isn't installed there.
v0.7.1 (pre-release)
A fix for Setup on PCs where it stopped with "can't unpack the installer".
Fixed
- Setup's installer is no longer deleted by antivirus. The installer inside DAORecomp.exe used to be a self-extracting program that Windows Defender wrongly flagged (a machine-learning false positive) and removed as it was unpacked. It now runs on python.org's official Python, signed by the Python Software Foundation.
- If antivirus still removes a file, Setup says so and points to Windows Security's Protection history to restore it.
- Each file Setup unpacks is checked against the download before it runs.
- Old unpacked installers are cleaned up instead of piling up in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\DAORecomp-build.
Updating
Download DAORecomp.exe below and run it, or use Update in the launcher. Your install, saves and settings are kept.
v0.7.0 (pre-release)
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation: frame generation, Intel XeSS-SR, field of view settings, and a launcher you can drive with a gamepad, with views for save backups and downloadable content.
DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.
New
- Frame generation (FSR 3.1): with temporal upscaling on, a frame is generated between each two the game draws, with its own pacing, for up to twice the frames on a high refresh rate display (about half a frame more latency). On a display that can't show twice the game's frame rate, only the real frames are shown. Turn it on under Graphics, in the launcher or in game.
- Intel XeSS-SR: a second temporal upscaler beside FSR 4 and FSR 3.1. It runs on most recent GPUs and is best on Intel Arc. Where it can't run, FSR is used instead. Frame generation works with either upscaler.
- Field of view: separate settings for gameplay and for conversations and cutscenes, from 80° to 120° across (91° is the game's own). They're in the launcher's Configure view and the in-game Graphics tab, and in-game changes apply straight away.
- Launcher, Save Backups: each time the game saves over a save, the save it replaces is kept as a backup. This view lists the backups by character, with where and when each was made, and puts one back after asking. Restoring again switches back.
- Launcher, Downloadable Content: shows which DLC and title update are installed, and which DLC need the title update.
- Launcher, controller navigation: any gamepad drives the whole launcher (Xbox, DualSense, DualShock and others). The button hints match the gamepad used last.
Changed
- OptiScaler and other upscaler overlays: if FSR fails while one is in use, FSR is started again, and after repeated failures the image is scaled instead of the game stopping. The overlay's DLL is named in the log.
Known issues
- The DLC campaigns have only been checked to start; please report anything that goes wrong in them.
- Cutscene field of view uses the conversation setting, but this hasn't been checked in every cutscene.
- Linux (Wine/Proton) is still untested; HDR there depends on the compositor.
v0.6.2 (pre-release)
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation: fixes for saving on a full disk, the installer's Cancel and the in-game Graphics settings, and a large internal cleanup.
DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.
Fixed
- Saving when the save folder can't be created: on a full disk or without write permission, the game was told the save had worked. Now it gets an error and shows its own message.
- Installer Cancel: Cancel now also ends tools a build step left running after it finished; before, it could wait for them.
- Graphics settings changed in game: vsync, sharpening, anisotropic filtering, motion blur and HDR brightness are now handed to the renderer safely while it draws. The frame rate is unaffected.
Changed
- Internal cleanup, no change in behavior:
- Shared helpers: one set of file and mod name rules, one way of writing files safely, one reader for the PC version's archives.
- Upscaler and Xenia code: split into smaller files by area, with this project's changes moved out of Xenia's own files.
Known issues
- The DLC campaigns have only been checked to start; please report anything that goes wrong in them.
- Linux (Wine/Proton) is still untested; HDR there depends on the compositor.
v0.6.1 (pre-release)
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation: a motion blur flicker fix, and fixes from a code review.
DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.
Fixed
- Motion blur flicker: with motion blur on, characters and parts of the scene could flicker while the camera moved. Some objects get a wrong motion vector for a single frame, and the blur made that visible. Now only motion that lasts more than a frame is blurred. The blur's tile pass costs about 0.05 ms more.
- Mod converter: a malformed mod file could make the PC→360 converter try to allocate gigabytes of memory. It now rejects such files right away.
- Installer Cancel: Cancel now stops a build step at once, including the compilers and linkers it started. Before, it waited for the step's next line of output, which could take minutes during a link.
- Timers: fixed a data race in the game's periodic timers.
Known issues
- The DLC campaigns have only been checked to start; please report anything that goes wrong in them.
- Linux (Wine/Proton) is still untested; HDR there depends on the compositor.
v0.6.0 (pre-release)
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation: motion blur, HDR quality High, and a vsync fix.
DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.
New
- Motion blur: Off (the default), Low or High, in the Graphics tab and the launcher. It blurs what moves (characters, objects, the camera) from temporal upscaling's motion vectors, so it needs temporal upscaling (FSR 4 or 3.1). The UI stays sharp, and camera cuts in conversations aren't smeared. It costs a little GPU time while the scene moves (about 0.25 ms at 4K on High); off, it costs nothing.
- HDR quality High: with HDR on, the image stays 16-bit scRGB from the upscaler to the display instead of 10-bit PQ. Meant for temporal upscaling; Standard stays the default.
Fixed
- VSync above 60 fps: with vsync on and a frame rate preset above 60 (or unlimited), frames waiting for the display could be thrown away, so a 60 Hz display showed fewer than 60 a second. Now none are dropped.
- Installer downloads: on some PCs downloads failed with CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED; the installer now checks certificates the way Windows does, and explains the usual causes (HTTPS scanning by antivirus, a VPN, the PC's clock) when one still isn't trusted.
Known issues
- The DLC campaigns have only been checked to start; please report anything that goes wrong in them.
- Linux (Wine/Proton) is still untested; HDR there depends on the compositor.
v0.5.6 (pre-release)
The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation: frame rates above 60, vsync you can switch off, and Title Update 7.
DAORecomp-Installer.exeis the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.
New
- Title Update 7: the game's last title update now works as well as 6 (Awakening and the later DLC campaigns need one of them). Drop its package on the launcher, or give it to the installer; 7 replaces 6. Its code is 6's but for a version number, so no rebuild is needed.
- Frame rate presets: 30 (the original), 60, 90, 120, 144, 165, 240 or unlimited, in the Graphics tab, replacing the 60 fps switch. F10 switches to 30 and back.
- VSync now controls the display's sync and can be changed in game; with it off, the game presents as soon as a frame is ready (with tearing where the display allows it).
Fixed
- Audio, file loading and the GPU's primitive cache: fixes from a review of the emulation layer, including bounds checks on file reads.
- With vsync off, the game's 60 Hz vertical blank no longer runs at 1 kHz.
- Windows 11 kept the game's 1 ms timer only while its window was visible; a hidden window now keeps it too.
Known issues
- The DLC campaigns have only been checked to start; please report anything that goes wrong in them.
- Linux (Wine/Proton) is still untested; HDR there depends on the compositor.
